We should have a choice!

I agree - it's annoying - to me, and to others - NOT ALL. (Relax!)
We should have a choice to turn the "underlining" off - simple. :)
A choice would not hurt Apple, or you - if you like random underlining of texted words!

Here is why I was looking for a way to turn this option off.

I have OCD and have pretty high standards when it comes to everything. I was making a list of songs to burn onto a mix CD for my son and when I typed in "Elton John - Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" the stupid phone underlined "Saturday Night"... WTF? It's a song title! Screw Apple and their stupid "innovations".

I understand I don't have to click the stupid link, but the bright orange color of the underlined text in my Notes list is distracting and aesthetically displeasing.

Since when is having options to turn something off an annoyance? It's not! You know what is annoying? Apple assuming they know what I want! THAT is annoying!

I suppose it's because I don't use Calendar the same way.

I'm currently in college, so most of my events I have in there are exams, quizzes, due dates, etc.

You can set up more than one calendars. I have one for work, one for home, one for my group events, it goes on and on. Much better than dumping it all to one calendar.

But is it more annoying than people who actually defend this system and the inability to turn it off?

Hey, do you have "I don't like Mondays" on that mix CD, or "Ruby Tuesday", or "Pleasant Valley Sunday"? All great songs!

I’m new to this forum, so I’m not sure how things work here, but nonetheless, this strikes me as a pretty silly thread. Why would someone who doesn't like a feature care that other people are crazy about it? And how is knowing why someone wants to turn it off relevant to the issue at hand? What those of us who don’t like this feature want to know is how to turn it off. Does anyone have an answer to this question? Help, please!

As I believe has been mentioned in a number of replies earlier, it's not something that can be disabled (at least not unless Apple themselves decides to do it or give us an option to do it).

Is there anyway to turn off the underlining in Messages?

Like if I say certain words like "tonight" it underlines it and prompts me to create an event in Calendar. Extremely annoying.

I love the way someone posts a query and the whole thread instantly becomes a sanctimonious tennis match of who is right and what is universally correct. Answer the question people- and leave out the predjudice and bigotry ☺️

I too find the underlining annoying- but am totally comfortable with people that love it. It appears to divide the demographic evenly- but even if it didn't it's part of apple's mission statement to comprehensively serve their customers.

So I love this feature, it's really useful and intuitive ☺️. How do we turn it off?

Seems like it has all been addressed already: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ios-7-text-message-settings.1638878/page-3#post-21195935

Omg marry me Liz u get me! It's not like we're gonna suddenly decide it's not annoying just coz someone else has childlike enthusiasm about it!

How is it annoying? Do you just not like to cosmetic aspect of it?

I think this is a great feature - I like that it's a shortcut to creating a Calendar event while in the middle of a conversation. Hyperlinking dates and times in a conversation is a really helpful tool for me/my business.

I've only had iOS7 for a few hours and have already used it several times.

I have never used it but I just don't understand how it can be disruptive? Just don't tap it. It's never caused me any problems.
My phone underlines random words , as in "starting" - no time or calendar event needed, wanted. Looks like I am trying to emphasize odd words in my text. Ugh

[doublepost=1473021301][/doublepost]Lol, you people saying you don't understand why this could be potentially irritating to some people have to be joking. Obviously, not being able to turn off a feature that you don't particularly care for is annoying. Imagine this... What if you had the option to play music on your phone, but didn't have the option to turn it off when you wanted to. How much would you love that?

Clearly it's not even close to being something like that. While I'm all for options for various things, seems like there's quite a range of how much of an effect something has.

You just quoted me from 3 years ago lol

The degree of effect may be lesser, sure. But the point is making user experiences as customizable as possible to suit everyone's preferences. It's the same reason why there's adjustable volume controls, brightness, and so on and so forth. It may not seem important at all to one person to be able to change how bright their screen is, but it may be to another person. Look, all I'm saying here is options are a good thing, because it keeps everyone happy.

And that's fine, I agree about options, it's just not really how things are in iOS to a large enough degree (and certainly not when it comes to a lot of smaller things that are of less impact/consequence), which isn't really anything new or strange at this point.

Haha, yes I did. I don't see why you're surprised people are still replying to your thread, despite it being published three years ago, because I don't think the issue has been fixed yet and that kinda happens a lot on the internet anyway lol.

I know it may be sort of difficult to understand, but for someone with OCD, this feature can actually be more bothersome than you would expect. Although, the degree of effect isn't even all that relevant, nor is everyone having the same opinion on whether it's annoying or not. What is relevant is there are at least a few people who do agree that it is an annoying feature, which they would like to have the option to disable. Honestly, I'm not trying to argue with anyone here. I just wanted to make a point that it's nice to make even the smallest, insignificant-seeming features customizable.

I'm not trying to argue either, simply pointing out that there's what's nice and what basically the reality of it all is. I'm not saying it's good or bad or right or wrong, just how it is.

Ok, then what is the reality of it all and how it is from your perspective?

I undertsand that you believe it's simply the norm in iOS to not provide certain options, or a wide array of options in general. But from my perspective of reality, it's becoming more important, common, and even expected all the time in this day and age to have these kinds of options at your disposal. Anyway, agree to disagree? Have a good day!
Well, again, I'm all for more options, I'm simply pointing out that's not really the iOS approach in many cases (especially for smaller and less consequential things). Doesn't really seem like there's any disagreement given that I agree with the the idea of more options and that the reality of iOS is what it is (it just what it is whether anyone agrees or disagrees with it).

Agreed. I tend to make a lot of plans through text messages and the fact that I can now click and make an event is extremely productive to me. I tend to get distracted easily and this helps me go ahead and make the event right when it's decided.

One of my favorite features, for sure!

Bad news if you are texting with someone who does not have a recent phone - I cannot make a meeting with my roommate as she has a dumb cell phone. So not being able to turn it off sucks. It sends garbage to dumb phones.

Ps - if I send a message with tomorrow or tonight in it for example she cannot read it
