Guys,

I would suggest downloading the IPSW file directly from the Apple. Please find the relevant links from the website I have mentioned below.

http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-8.1-download-links-for-iphone-and-ipad-released-direct-links/

Please a download manager such as IDM or similar one. What a download manager does is open Simultaneous links to the server and hence maintains the download speed over the entire file.

Then update through iTunes either through dfu mode or updating.

I don't have a very fast connection. I got a 4Mbps line and I was able to download within an hour. That too just after the release when the servers are thrashed the most.

Let me know if helps.

Thank u for ur help.
It's still the same as other links. When I tried to download it and it was too slow and failed. Then you mentioned IDM and I downloaded that program.
Now I am still on very slow speed to download it but at least it keeps going. Maybe I will finish it by tonight..:) Thank u very much again..
I just don't understand. I can download other stuff fast except from apple. It's so weird..

Make sure that you RIGHT-click the download link from his link and select "Download with IDM" and it should go much faster, then once you download the file, manually move it to the iTunes software directory. If using Windows, this will be in Computer--C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\

Ouch, dialup is faster than that. So apparently this solution isn't going to work for everyone... It seems as though you are not getting multiple connections established even with the download manager. That looks like the transfer rate of a single connection, the same as if you downloaded normally through a browser. I'm not sure why that would happen, I'm new to the software so unfortunately I won't be much help here. There may be settings you can adjust to get more connections to the server, but something isn't right.

I have been trying to fix this issue for 3 days.
I set to Google DNS and it didn't work.
I reset my router and it didn't work.
I uninstall antivirus program and it didn't work.
I am running out the ideas..
But at least I am still downloading it, I will just leave my pc on and hopefully when I get up tomorrow morning, it will be there..:)

Upgraded iPad 4 and iPad Mini-R tonite, both from iOS 7.1.2 (smooth) to iOS 8.1 (also smooth.) Took about 15 minutes for each download and another 10 minutes each for installation.

Now they have widgets in Notification Center (YAY!) and I can't tell any difference in performance. Nothing seems to have taken a hit. I'm good. :apple:

YMMV, but I hope not. :)

Well, after 18 hours I finally finish downloading. It's very painful to see my download so slow. Wish I could find a way to improve it. Thanks for the help again.

Did you just take that screenshot or is that an older picture? Also is your home computer a Mac? I don't really know how that would make a difference, but I have a hard time understanding how I can download from any Google source at 2 to 3 MBps and still max out at 200kB from the Apple server. Also we have other people posting with issues like mine. I do not have internet connectivity problems anywhere else on the internet, and have tried multiple PC's and access points and get the same result (all running Windows). Right now I'm on my Alienware M14xR2 with maxxed out specs and Killer-N 1202 wireless card, hardware issues on my end are out of the question.

This whole thing seems odd...

My home computer is a mac, it is a direct download link that I was using.

Well since this issue appears to have affected a lot more people than just myself, I have to assume that it is in fact an overloaded Apple download server that is the culprit. Maybe they are intentionally limiting download speeds to ~100kBps to compensate for this increased load on their servers. Either way, there is not much we can do about it except wait it out. Crazy that in this age of technology, we are still dealing with download speeds comparable to dial-up from credible sources. Google has it figured out though. Next phone might be a Nexus.
A week out? It is now a week after launch, still taking 4X longer than it would for me, if I was trying on launch day.

I just got off chat w/Apple. They say the servers "are working perfectly".

The person wasn't any help. I gave him links to this and my other thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1806829/

I live in the USA, and having the same issue. Last week I left it to go for my iPad overnight and it took 12 hours, as logged in that thread.

Long story short, on the 10th I switched carriers and they gave me a 16GB iPhone while waiting for 64GB to come in (said they'd waive restocking fee for 14 days). Well, no 64GB, but a 128GB came in, got it today, and w/iOS 8.0. I can't do a restore from backup until I update to 8.1 :mad:

I prefer to update via iTunes (less issues), but, right now 8.1 on the phone (over the air) has progressed slightly (1/16th?), and 2 hours remain (170MB). iTunes: 28.8MB of 1.95GB - 39 hours remaining.

Everything else works just fine, even apps/app updates download normally.

This is ridiculous!

I had no issues like this with iOS 8.0 nor 8.0.2. Somewhere along the line or at apple's site, someone is throttling, somehow.

WTF?

Thanks for this tip. I am currently on 1Mbps net while on travel. Since it will take few hours to download ios8.1 file, can I pause and restart the download using IDM?

Also is the ios8.1 .ipsw file from these links same as directly downloading from Apple?

http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-8-beta-download-release-date-features-rumors-and-news-update/
www.ipswdownloader.com/download-iphone-ipsw-files.php

And is there any way to get it from Apple servers using IDM?

Also, what's the difference between GSM and Global ipsw file? Is it better to go with the global version and Will the global file work on At&t 5S?

I find that the Apple download speeds can be incredibly slow. I assume that when they release a new update they get a huge influx of people attempting to download it, but you'd think they have figured this out by now.

I've had this at various times, where apps, video, everything else but the software update would be normal speed, except the iOS software update, but, I think it's between your Mac and Apple's servers, not apple's servers. One time I was having this problem, kept trying at various times for 2 weeks, same results, installed a VPN app (free trial), then it had normal download speed. So, it's possible the ISPs are throttling or have limited bandwidth connecting to apple's servers or something, not sure what.
