probably because iOS 9 is going to only be for 64 bit users, but Apple still wants beats subscription numbers to go up, so 8.4 will be the last iOS update for 32-bit hardware.

Good call, didn't think of that. But following apples usual pattern, the iPhone 5c should get updated to iOS 9. And don't forget: they are still selling A5 devices...

Who cares if they do? No one will force you to use it....

Throw it in a "Music" folder and be done with it. Not a terribly difficult thing to do, nor a horrible solution.

Until we know what the introduction of a potential streaming service has on Itunes, let's wait and see what the "music" folder like.

Why isn't Apple making Apple Pay in Australia a priority!? We have more nfc enabled terminals than most countries and we also receive updated iPhone models the same day as the US!

Yeah, lets fill the 16G iPhones up with non deletable Apple crapware, its about time Apple copied something from Samsung :)

It's our banks, they need to agree to it, and like the big four want to skim of any profit to another multinational!

also what is it with MR never putting figures on their graphs? does this represent 5 people or 500? lets say a dot is one person/phone, then you had a total of 4 people visit...wow

I guess they really don't want people to be updated to the latest software.

Possible Timeline
Currently iOS 8.1.3

Late March Apple event announces iPad Pro, more info about Apple Watch pricing, battery life, and features, iOS 8.2 release the following week before :apple: Watch is released to make sure there are no bugs

WWDC 2015 around June 8th?: Release of 12 Retina Macbook, announcement of iOS 9 and OS X ?; release of iOS 8.3 for bug fixes, a few minor changes like new emojis etc.

iOS 8.4 release in Summer 2015 for Beats/iTunes Radio hybrid service support after a few betas

iOS 9 in September with iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus

This. 8.4 will be a release around September for those that wilL not get 9. I think Apple is finy testing far enough in advance to avoid massive bugs.

I guess they really don't want people to be updated to the latest software.

Or they really want to. They count every 8.x.x release to the iOS 8 install base and with every (little) feature release with accompanied marketing of the update there will be people who finally update from iOS 7.x.x.

Seeing as they're still selling iPad mini 1 and iPhone 5C, I don't think this will be the case.

----------

Tomorrow's headline: iOS 8.4 Beta released to developers.

And shortly after. "iOS 8.5 is being seen in our web logs indicating Apple is already working on.........."

Eh. It depends on their policies. I've worked at places where maintaining that many branches was easy. I've worked at places where maintaining 2 branches was hell.

With as many lines of code that iOS has and the amount of engineer bloat that Apple has taken on, its hard to imagine it not trending towards the "hellish" side.

it is just me? or because of all the news today, did you get orgasm too? :apple::cool:

Think it was just you. That's an incredible amount of anticipation. I'll just wait and see what happens. Too many other things in life to be getting that excited about future iOS updates.

So what is the purpose of iOS 8.3 then? Seems like a lot of point releases between now and WWDC.

I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped supporting 32bit iOS devices (A5, A6) in iOS 9. They might support them, but they might not. I look at it that these 32 bit devices are near or already 2 years old, and by the time iOS 9 rolls around, all iOS devices with A5 & A6 will be 2 years old. Apple dropped PowerPC support pretty much 3 years after shipping the last PPC device... Those were fancy expensive computers like a PowerMac G5 costing over $2000 that was no longer good enough to receive an update to Snow Leopard.

I think they will continue iOS 8 longer than usual, hence the iOS 8.4 release. They want to do like what they did to the iPhone 3G. Even though it couldn't really support iOS 4, they released it for the iPhone 3G so they could make money off iAd, and iBooks. They will keep iOS 8 and simply add money making services to it, but mostly focus on 64bit devices.

For those claiming they won't discontinue support for non 64bit devices, Apple wasn't afraid to kill the 4th generation iPod touch and release a scaled down 5th generation iPod touch, JUST to support iOS 7.

As greedy as Tim Cook is these days, they might dump the 8GB iPhone 5C, and produce an 8GB iPhone 5S, discontinue the iPad mini, and leave the entry iPad price as the $299 iPad mini 2, or slash iPad mini 2 pricing by$50, and discontinue the iPod touch entirely or just leave it with iOS 8.4. I'm not so sure it's worth it for Apple to make a new A7 based iPod touch. Could be wrong. Also they would leave the Apple TV on iOS 8.4 or replace it with a A7 or later based box.

If you were to add up the total space Apple apps take up, it would be quite small....

A streaming app would undoubtedly not take up very much space. If it's that big a deal, there are options with more storage available.

iOS 11 and OS XI will be the merge point.
You heard it here first.

Nope. OS X will continue to be called OS X for marketing reasons. I doubt they will merge. They will share features, looks, and compatibility, but they won't merge. OS X will be controlled with a keyboard and pointing device. iOS will be controlled with fingers. Don't see that changing.

Wait, you're suggesting they'll stop supporting the iPhone 5c just 2 years after its introduction?

No chance of happening. For comparison, they're still supporting the iPad 2 now, 5 years after its introduction.

who knows, after all, they did introduce the iPad 4th gen 6 months after the 3rd gen.

I think it's going to be a rough road trying to convince people to ditch Spotify for Beats. The inability to create lists as in Spotify alone is a non-starter. No free version is also a non-starter. For these two main points I don't see it at all.

Now, if Apple takes the Spotify approach full cloth, then they have a better shot. Otherwise, it's dead on arrival.
Honestly, who would give up what they have on Spotify for a far lesser offering?

Why wait?

----------

Judging by the earlier story, iOS 9 is going to be the "Snow Leopard" of iOS, focusing on under the hood optimisations and performance tweaks rather than features.

About time too if you ask me. Long overdue.

Although I find the fact iOS 8.2 is in beta 5, iOS 8.3 is in beta 1, and iOS 8.4 is under development to be utterly confusing and sums up iOS 8 in its entirety: a mess.

In my mind all the more reason to simply include it as the main feature of an iOS release that is (apparently) lacking in new features. It's being worked on...probably going to be announced at WWDC or +/- a few months....why not just use it to promote iOS9? The average consumer won't give two hoots about "optimization" but would be intrigued by an all new streaming service with Siri control....just my 2 cents.

That being said - bring it on as an 8.4 release...the less I have to wait for the new features the better.
