Ios 8 install

Hello all. I've got a new 5s for my kids and it came with ios 7.1.1. I went and installed ios 8 and the restored from a back up. Then I realized it had put ios 7 back on the phone. How could this happen? Now it's saying 60 hours to install ios 8.

I would download iOS 8 directly and do the restore from iTunes

Try connecting the phone to iTunes, and doing the update to iOS 8. It should be faster that way.

Definitely tried iTunes and it said 905 hours. Eventually it fails. At a loss.
