iOS 8 Message Avatars

I could have sworn that iPhone 6 plus users were now able to get avatars along side the chat bubbles. I looked through my settings and can't find anything for the life of me. I tried searching the new, no luck, but I did see mention of avatars for group chats. Which leads me to my next question.

Are avatars for iPhone 6 plus users only added to group chats in iOS 8? And if so, how do you activate those? When I go into a group chat, I just have a little round circle with their initials in it. It's not pulling in any images. How does your contacts pull in avatar images?

Thanks in advance for the help!

These aren't called "avatars".

Those are contact photos. You have to load them manually from the contacts app or find the photo in the photos app first. If there is no picture, it is preloaded as the initials of the person.

Got it. Contact Photos. Still, I'm so confused...

I actually allowed facebook to push over information into my contacts, or share info to my contacts, whatever, and still, no images are pushing over. Even when I turn the phone into landscape mode, it's just the initials. Not a big deal but would just enjoy having the pictures show up...

You can go into the settings app > Facebook > update contacts

that'll usually force it to update your contacts with their Facebook info.

Or you can just edit the contacts manually and add their photos that way.

tried to refresh that under settings many times but didnt work. the heck?!
You need to ensure the contacts match up. So their name and number need to match their Facebook Contact details. Then it will pull their data properly.

Avatars only show up in the group message and in the main messages screen.

Not in a convo with 1 person. That would be stupid

Why would that be stupid? And based on what has been mentioned about iPhone 6 Plus specifically they should show up for all conversations.

Mine shows for a convo with 1 person. I have the chat bubbles even if I don't have a pic loaded for that contact. I get multiple if it is a group chat.

Because you already know which persons thread your in.

Whereas the avatar in a group chat is so you can quickly glance to see who's message your reading.

I believe we might be talking about slightly different places here. You are referring to them being used within a conversation, while what I was referring to (the new piece that is there for iPhone 6 Plus) is having them on the actual initial conversation list page where all the different conversations are displayed.

I don't know what is going on, but Facebook would only sync some of my contacts... So I started using Sync.me and that worked like a charm. It also brings in contacts from Linkedin and Google+.

Is this what you're talking about?

What do you mean you just added pictures... When in the messages app their are little picture circles for lack of a better description on the side of the name in the messages list... You can't hide them... They either show up as a blank pic... Or a pic that you have added from Facebook or another source... Can you take a screenie so I can understand what your talking about...

Nevermind. Those pictures beside the names are for iPhone 6+ only

Ah ok... Well now you know how I got them... I think they're broken from Facebook until they update their app... Which could be a while... Doesn't look like they're in a rush...
Apparently the Facebook update is in review.
