1. Whats new in iOS8? For a basic user like me (no iCloud, iBooks etc.)
2. Why does it need 5GBs? Is it really going to take 5GBs of space?

1. www.apple.com/ios
2. Just for installation...move things around, replace things, etc. You get the space back when it's done updating.
