Been waiting for this feature since I started using iCloud Keychain. Great to hear!

If "generic app #1" saved usernames/passwords into Safari/Keychain, then would "malicious app #2" be able to find/access/retrieve those usernames/passwords from "generic app #1" ?

What kind of security and verification process does this login feature use?

Sounds great, but I think I'll be using my fingerprint instead :)

Great news for people with older devices though.

Doesn't the finger print and this feature go hand in hand? Maybe I missed something, but I thought you had to authenticate this feature to allow fingerprint to work since it's using some keychain functionality or something.

Just as good as Chrome's cloud-synchronised passwords and settings?

If I'm correct, I think its talking about iOS applications being able to use iCloud passwords. Like if I have a password for Netflix.com in Safari and I open the Netflix app, I just retrieve the password for Netflix.com and use it in the Netflix app.

Not sure if Android already does this.

The only trouble with systems that handle the ID/password process automatically behind the scenes is when you lose your passwords, such as accidentally wiping your keychain and because you've not had to type in your passwords for years (or created really good, complex ones) you can't remember what they were!

I can still remember my "Compunet" logon and password from 1986 because I had to type it in every time I went online - but I wouldn't have a clue what my current broadband one is.

I know what you mean, but still, I could live with this tradeoff. :D

I hope they allow password managers like 1Password participate in this capability. A lot of us prefer to manage our passwords outside of Safari for various reasons. Having deeper integration would be awesome.

I use LastPass, and when I use the bookmarklet to log in, Safari asks me if I want to save the password. It's kind of a workaround to get Safari to work with it, but it's good enough for now.

This is a huge equalizer in the "apps vs. web" race. The beauty of this small change is that it will now make it as easy to use an app as it is to use the accompanying website. Currently, I'll choose to use, say, the Fandango mobile site over the Fandango app, even if the app is smoother, cooler, etc., because the mobile site autofills my login and credit card info, making a movie ticket purchase substantially faster. By adding the convenience of iCloud Keychain, apps once again have a leg up on websites.

Sure, I'd love to see some cool "Samsung" features like water resistance, and changing photo focus in post when the new iPhone comes out, but CONTINUITY, that's the *****! That's why I love Apple. A powerful, building block improvement that will have a massive impact on the whole ecosystem. Apple doesn't chase trends and run around trying to find the next gimmick that will catch consumers fancy. They LEAD. It's not always obvious to everyone, and it sometimes requires a degree of faith, but not total faith. Because what little faith is required is always rewarded in smart, elegant, surprising and often game changing ways. They are methodical, which is what allows them to create an ecosystem that truly is more than the sum of it's parts. But too often, we all are guilty of getting distracted by the next shiny thing, and wish "our guys" would do something fun & cool like the "other guys" are doing. Well I, for one, am feeling pretty damn great right now about the horse I put my money on back in 1984. WWDC has restored the "faith" that has sustained me the past year or so (not the hugest fan of the aesthetic introduced in iOS7), and I can't wait the see how all these huge "little" changes play out in the next year.

YES PLEASE! Thanks! The future of iOS looks very bright!

If there's one thing I ask is that in iOS 8 please don't forget the wifi network you connect to during setup after it's done!

Hoping for 1Password integration with apps

My biggest thorn these days is having to open 1Password to get the app password, copy it, then paste it into the app every time. Hoping the APIs will provide cross-app integration while maintaining security.

About time.

Android (using Chrome) and Windows Phone (using IE) have been doing this password sharing for some time. Apple is really stepping up their cloud services to be as integrated as their physical products are.

It was said a while back, by a friend of Gruber, that Google is getting better at design faster than Apple is at web services. This year though, Apple is catching up/caught up which should at least scare Google.

It does, though to be more accurate it's actually Chrome that is doing this.

Password managers like Last Pass on Android implemented this idea earlier this year.

Wouldn't be surprising if that is where Apple got the idea.

What's to stop a malicious app developer from requesting "google.com" or "facebook.com" login credentials?

Do Apple reviewers personally check that the website is affiliated with the developer?

sadly it's still of no use to me, unless they'll release a chrome extension for windows or something.

until then, i'll stick with lastpass.

How does Touch ID fit in with all of this? Is it an either or thing or will users have to use both?

Here here my friend well said!!

Dictionary attacks can automatically account for common letter substitutions and have made the argument in that comic outdated and extremely misleading. IIRC Randall himself went over it saying essentially the same thing after being criticized multiple times over it.

Also, my passwords are all longer than xkcd's example.
