they didn't mention expanding quick reply to 3rd party in the keynote. my impression is that this release has much fewer new APIs and features than iOS 8, which has allowed the refocus on the optimisation and battery improvements.

pip is iPad only I believe

I would love if there was a quick reply for third party messaging apps. I also would love if the split screen and slide over would be available for my iPhone6+ which is almost like an iPad anyway. Unfortunately it seems like this will not be the case in either one

their slide of iOS 9 mentioned "3rd Party Notifications" tho.

I always assumed that quick reply was available for 3rd party applications in iOS 8 but was never implemented by Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and etc for whatever reason. Guess not...

They showed this in one of the sessions. Developers can now use textfields in actionable notifications, but it needs to be implemented of course. When they implement app links, they can also open a conversation directly and you can swipe back to your previous app at any time, which is a neat improvement too.

interesting, but this doesn't really reveal anything on its own, does it? not sure if any session has covered this yet

edit: just saw the post above. brilliant!

They should at least have interactive notifications with two set answers like "Ok" and "Thanks"... But it's WhatsApp, the laziest developers ever.
Yes, they are the worst. Even if Apple were to allow 3rd party developers to use quick reply in iOS9, Whats App would not support it until shortly before WWDC 2016....
By the way, they are still using the worst user management system ever which prevents them from releasing apps for iPad or Mac. WA SUCKS!

Hmm...I thought so too. My Outlook app has always allowed me to quick-reply ever since I have had it installed. I have wondered why no other app (that I know about) had this.

quick1.png quick2.png Sorry...my mistake...that's not quick 'reply'! Don't know what I was thinking

Doesn't seem like there is a quick reply there for Outlook--there are actions that can be taken from notification, but not an actual quick reply (which has been limited to Apple's Messages app so far, until iOS 9 at least, as I recall).

Yeah, I think these are called 'Notification Actions', which were available for 3rd party apps unlike quick reply.

Oh yes, quick 'reply'...sorry, my bad :) Yes, that's not there in IOS8.

I am almost positive they will announce these features for the 6S+ in September, citing the upgraded ram

iOS 9 provides an API to do just this. Apps can supply a text field for notification banners. WhatsApp just needs to adopt this.

I've noticed that every Notification Action I've used so far (eg. Facebook Messenger) actually ends up opening the app to complete the action. For example, muting a conversation. I found that to be weird. Is this true for all Notification Actions?

That sounds more for actionable notifications (which is there is iOS 8 already as I recall) not necessarily quick reply.

Nope. You can display a textfield for quick reply just as iMessage does. This is a new API in iOS 9:

Ah, text field as in text input. Got it. Yes, that would seem like quick reply type of functionality then.

It means that they likely can, but they would still need to implement that in an app update.
