ios adding icons to texts

this has occured a few times - always with the alien symbol. I get a text from someone with the alien symbol, but they never sent that. Pictures attached. Why would ios add an icon that wasn't even inputted?

Its because they are using an emoji that you do not have.

Good guess, but no. The sender only used the little arm and nothing else. ios actually created the alien thingy out of nothing.

Both on ios 8. Not sure which version.

The "Little Arm" is available in different skin tones now. Perhaps you do not have the corresponding arm.

Update your phone to 8.3, should fix it! Have a look in settings to see what your version is. 🙂

If one of you isn't on 8.3 then you need to send the standard yacky yellow emoticon, otherwise you'll get the alien.
