A friend of mine posted this on twitter. Is this common ? I did not know iOS had alert emergencies like that.

For those that don't know, there's a hurricane called sandy heading to New York.

Yeah I think it's a new thing in IOS 6. If you goto settings and notifications its at the bottom of the list.

AFAIK, they are in certain areas, just not nationwide yet.

Oh it changed because when it first debuted we didn't have em at all and im in NYC and didnt get anything

Edit:Like a nutjob I checked the the photo its on sprint AT&T still doesn't have it

It looks real, and with hurricane sandy coming I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

If you ask me, it seems to be a new thing with iOS 6 like others said. I sure haven't seen it before.

Looks like the message is part of the new National Emergency Alert system (CMAS).

Someone else posted it too. The person has sprint. So I do believe is a sprint thing.

That is correct, it was introduced in iOS 5. When I was in Japan, in Notification Settings there was an "Earthquake Warning" setting that you could turn on.
