And now Swiftkey will go downhill. Time to move to Swype.

The existing Windows Phone keyboard is better than SwiftKey, so either this is a competition-reducing move or a userbase acquisition move or.. Oh wait, nothing Microsoft is doing these days around mobile makes any sense, so why should this either?

Smart move!
I really like what Microsoft is doing recently. (In "doing" I count acquisitions too).

Apple's acquisitions on the other hand...
If it wasn't for beats you'd think they are broke
Just because we don't hear about them doesn't mean Apple isn't acquiring interesting companies. On average they snap up a handful every year, most of which never get a mention in the press.

It seems like a good acquisition for Microsoft.

But stay away from any keyboard that asks for FULL ACCESS.

You can use Swype without giving full access. If you need another language, ENABLE FULL ACCESS, download the languages you want and DISABLE FULL ACCESS after. It's in Swype's Website manual

I have used it for a while, but correction got worse and worse. And now with the 6S I like the 3D-Touch-Trackpad-function, which only works with Apple's
keyboard.
Now I'm glad I ditched SwiftKey, there's no way I would have sent MS all my input, which is a prerequisite for the swipe function.

odd purchase given that MS already had a speed typing keyboard, which was pretty good, in fact I liked it better then swiftkey. Plus the way the windows phones are sliding into oblivion, it doesn't make sense.

It's almost as bad as $3 billion for Beats.

No, nothing is almost as bad as that.

Right??!! Same thing!! =D
Oh, no... wait: one is a very highly profitable company, putting form over function & creating a physical object and overcharging for it... while the other makes a piece of add-on software in a field where the product has only recently evolved from free to 99¢.

I get that you're eager to bash Beats (I hate them too), but I've always found that a point to is better made, when it actually makes sense.

I like Swiftkey, but it's always been hugely buggy.... the purchase by MS seems like a match made in heaven.

Good match... With Windows 10 under the gun for tracking everything, Swiftkey has always reserved the right to keep a copy of everything the user types.

That's probably why Microsoft bought them, they seem to be really going the google way of doing things these days. Windows 10 is actually a pretty good OS it's just been tarred with Microsoft's total inability to communicate, and do things above board.

MS wants the prediction engine. While wordflow is great on Windows Phone 10, SwiftKey's prediction engine is better.

They "track" (I use track loosely) what you type to improve next word prediction. SwiftKey (and any other predictive text engine) build a word library based on your usage patterns.
They all start off with a base library and then improve on it based on your usage patterns.

It seems like a curious acquisition for MS, since they seem to be getting out of the phone business. I assume they'd want it for their Surface tablets.

I've just bought a 2 in 1 (Surface clone) and use the on-screen keyboard a lot. Any improvement in predictive type is always welcome. With Cortana built in to the OS I'm finding I'm using it for a lot of things. If it can better predict my usual queries then brilliant. The handwriting recognition for entry using the stylus is pretty good now but it would definitely benefit from better prediction.

Swiftkey would presumably work for touch devices of all sizes, not just phones. I hope this isn't limited to just MS branded products, and makes it into anything running Windows 10.

Incredible app for bilingual users. But for users who seldom switch languages such as I, there are a couple of other choices, including my favourite, Typany.
