All I want is a file system and a native word processing app, not a notepad, in iOS. If they implement those in the next iteration of the OS, I am good. :)

Goodreader for iPad works great as a filesystem, and files stored there can be opened in any other application that can use it on your device. $1.99

Pages is MS Word compatible and a pretty nice mobile word processor with a bit of desktop publishing added for good measure. $9.99

So for about $12 on top of your iPad purchase price, you can get most of the functionality you desire, and because it's not part of the OS, these apps can be updated at will, independent of the OS releases.

I've got an iPad2 and even though i love it and wouldn't swap it, I can't help feeling a bit let down by iOS. When i see youtube clips of Honeycomb/Android 3 on tablets like the Motorola Xoom, it looks far better than iOS.

My only problem with the above statement is that I don't consider watching video clips of Honeycomb good enough to suddenly be "let down" by iOS. Were these fair and honest reviews of Honeycomb, or were they Motorola PR clips? How it looks and how well it operates are two different things. I'd suggest actually playing with one of those devices before deciding that you have Honeycomb envy, because it might have its own problems as well.

Edited to add:

Even Microsoft Windows doesn't come with a word processor. Does anything come with that out of the box? Pages is indeed a great app, by the way.

Great, thanks for the advice guys. Still waiting on mine to come in but have been messing with the wife's so I haven't really dedicated myself to throughly researching apps and all. Will try the suggested apps when I get mine.

forget widgets, why after seeing iCab and atomic..why can't Safari have half of those features? why must these default browsers be so miniimalist?it frustrates me. if Safari can adopt those features. Heck if Apple can learn from most its competitors of its default apps. Ipad stock would be so much better.

+1!

I locked up my iPad 2 yesterday to the point where I could not swipe screens left or right. I was using iCircuit. The only thing that worked was the 4 finger swipe up gesture.

I had to hard reset my iPad.

Uh, wrong thread?

Steve jobs admitted the iPad was developed first!!! He decided the idea could be used in a phone!!! If you think about it, the iPhone was the first successful tablet!!!

No, I don't think this was actually said, or that iOS was ever meant for tablets.

They got the rubber band scrolling running and some other bits and thought hey let's make a phone and the tablet idea was shelved.

That's very different to saying the tablet was made 1st.

They would never have developed iOS in the way it is, from scratch for a 10" screen of the iPad's resolution. It's obvious it was only every made/intended for a small screen device.

as an ex-Xoom owner I can safely say I will take iOS over Honeycomb any day.

+1 for pages being great. I wrote my entire job application on it ( and got accepted:) . It truly is worth its price.

I own an iPad 2, but I did test a Xoom for about an hour. The Xoom has some nice features but as it's been pointed out the OS right now is really rough. But in time it's gonna get better. What I liked about Honeycomb was the overall presentation with widgets and the notification bar. Chrome blows away Safari, but Atomic Browser can fix that issue on the iPad.

We all know Apple has to improve the notifications and to date has not. I would like to see some simple stuff like a wallpaper switcher. That's nothing big, why can't we have that? Widgets are nice, I would love to have a calender and weather widget, especially on the lock screen. The YouTube on Honeycomb is much better eye candy than iOS.

What surprises me is why the App store on the iPad does not use more gestures. You go to the featured section for example and you have to press the right arrow in the lower right to see the next page, why is that not a swipe gesture? Same with looking at the top apps, you keep having to press the more button, it should just start buffering better and let you use gestures to browse down.

Also i find youtube app on ipad historically unreliable

Having owned an iPad and played around w/ my friend's Xoom, here are the differences.

Honeycomb has more functionality, but is also not as intuitive as iOS. It's not as polished or fluid, but as long as you're willing to mess w/ the settings, it allows you to do more things and more customizations than the iPad.

2 features would transform the ipad for me:

1) A file system that allows me to edit image, HTML and CSS files, and then load them on safari / any other installed browser locally, offline.

2) User accounts at least for mobile me, so that me & my other half can each check our mail separately....We can't afford two luxury items which is basically what the iPad is at the moment (although ironically it would be more than that if it had these features).

To those who say I should just buy a Macbook Air, please save your breath...If I wanted another laptop I would have bought one. I went for the iPad for the tablet form factor

If you think about it, the iPhone was the first successful tablet!!!

If you're going to refer to the iPhone as the first successful tablet, then I think you're forgetting about the entire Palm Pilot era from the late 90s to 2007 or so. Also, lets not forget that there was a period when tablet PCs got pretty big starting around 2003 (ala Windows XP Tablet), but died out after a few years til the iPad brought them back.

Customization does not equal functionality.

I would say that it sounds like you're just disappointed in the home screen on iPad. It's the apps and functionality of the iPad that set it apart from an Android tablet. Apps look and perform better hands down. I'm really sick of the widget argument, the widgets are what bring Android to its knees. Ever notice the lag swiping left and right on an Android tablet or phone? Remove all widgets and its as smooth as an iPhone. I personally don't want it to simply have it, I want it to work well and not be laggy. So until Apple can implement some form of homescreen info without dragging the battery and performance down, I don't want it.
