Hi all. I had this interesting thought and wanted to share with you. Assuming Apple continues along the current OS release timing (iOS every year, OS X every other):

2011 - OS X 10.7, iOS 5
2012 - iOS 6
2013 - OS X 10.8, iOS 7
2014 - iOS 8
2015 - OS X 10.9, iOS 9
2016 - iOS X (i.e. OS X and iOS unified???)

highly doubt it, unless there's a huge shift in how PCs are used over that span of time. of course you'll see feature creep as new tech will benefit the other platform, but the needs of the PC user are quite different than that of the smartphone user.

there are a lot of us who actually use our PCs for more than just surfing the interwebs and email.

many people feel that Lion will be the last iteration of OS X, and they'll move on to OS XI after that...I mean, where do you move from Lion when it comes to jungle cats? Lion is king...it would feel like a step backward to come out with another cat named OS after that

Actually, that might happen if we see hints of Mac OS X 10.8, but they might end 10 and go to 11 because the Lion is supposed to be the king of cats, so we'll see.
iOS and Mac OS X won't be unified, but they will come fairly close.

Considering some of the events that have happened over the last year that's really not funny and almost in bad test.

I we really going to start that debate again? Someone suggests "Ocelot" or "Liger" in 3...2...1...

I do believe iOS and OS X will merge eventually but we'll see.

Would be cool if they named Mac OS after constellations.

Mac OS Orion

I like that idea too :)

I second naming them after the constellations. They already have the cosmic look to the OS X lineup established. Although in my developer preview of Lion, there were no such looking backgrounds. Anyway, this would lend them to COUNTLESS names. There would be no hierarchy, as in some folks are saying that Lion is king and there will be nothing better. I tend to think this is the last iteration of OS X. I think we won't see OS XI in two years though. I think Apple will ride out Lion for a while, the same way they are riding out the iPhone 4. Usually there is a new iPhone every year, but now we are seeing them wait until Fall for the iPhone 5. So the rumors say. Nothing was announced in WWDC this year about the 5. Makes me believe it's true. I think Apple will start to wait longer to do major updates/upgrades. It makes no sense to rush though all you R&D. Not to mention buying a new Apple product every year to replace your "old" one is a bitch. I just replaced my 2006 iMac since it won't run on Lion with a new iMac and replaced my Hackintoshed netbook with a MacBook Pro since I travel all the time with my job and I am constantly on a plane. I won't be upgrading until the software won't run on the hardware anymore. Maybe when the 128-bit OS XIII releases I'll drop the cash again.

They should start doing Bears.

Brown Bear
Grizzly Bear
Black Bear
Polar Bear
etc.

That would be cool, but the 'bear' in the titles seems out of place. I think sharks would be be a good way to go to:

Hammerhead
Mako
Great White
Whale
Tiger (again :D)

To be honest they could go in any direction with this. I think birds might be a good call, as there are millions of them, but who knows, it could be time for OS 11
