iOS10 & iTunes sync problem

Just updated my 5s to iOS10 and I cannot sync it to iTunes vs 12.2.2.25 (the latest available for Lion) over USB;

I get a "invalid response" message...

any clues???

first of all can someone confirm that your iPhone 5s was connecting and syncing fine on iOS9 and iTunes 12.2.2.25!?
I've been seeing online in community fora that even that was not possible for others...
