IOS11: Carplay Updates

Today's announcements for IOS11 left me a little empty. Carplay has had minor updates since it's been out. With many manufacturers and aftermarkets now offering it, Apple hasn't done much here to enhance the experience. Do not disturb was the only carplay fluff they offered today.

Where is a Weather app for Carplay? Is it really that hard to have a weather app in Carplay. Where is ability to show Album art? Why not allow 3rd party devs to offer other apps besides audio only apps? Maybe I missed something but didn't hear much of anything coming for Carplay in IOS11.

Yeah, looks like CarPlay enhancements will have to wait for a major point release or iOS 12.

At least it should be getting lane guidance and speed limits in Maps. That's something I've definitely been waiting for.

I just bought a car this past weekend that can use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Apple Car Play is great EXCEPT I think the Apple Maps stink and I'd rather use Google Maps any day. Android Auto works fine EXCEPT it doesn't receive iMessage texts and doesn't support Apple Music (for which I have a family subscription). Wish I could run both systems concurrently OR have Apple allow Google Maps (or Waze, or others).

i just but also bought one on sunday. off topic, but when you are playing music can you hear the maps giving you directions? i can't, would you know a fix? thank you

I can but you have to turn the separate "alert" volume up to hear the directions with the music.

Has an one tried IOS11 with Carplay?
I tried it yesterday and the on screen guidance is not working properly. I can see the speed limit signg and the route/blue line leading the direction I am supposed to take, however the black on-screen guidance which tells you in advance where the next turn will be etc... does not work.

I'd also love to know what changes there are for Carplay in iOS 11

I do not see too many changes yet.

It looks like they are trying to do UI changes to the Maps but it doesnt show everything yet.

I don't notice anything different other than you get speed limit signs showing you what the current speed limit is on the road you are traveling.
Supposedly they also added 'lane assist' like in google maps but i have not seen it work.

Is your on screen guidance working? mine just shows a black line but no directions, if i click on it then it goes into 'reduced guidance' or something like that which just shows me ETA, but if i click it again for it to show me extended guidance (eg, where the next turn is) i just get a black line

Exact same of me. But they added that little white strip at the bottom that shows arrival time & ETA. Which leads me to believe they are still in process of updating UI.

Thanks yeah I noticed the white bottom line as well, just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me not getting the on screen guidance

It's very quiet. On my 2017 CRV, it seems that the navigation volume only goes to 11 (lol) but regular music volume goes up to 40. The software doesn't quiet the music when nav speaks with Apple Maps while using CarPlay.

However, when I plug in my old LG G2 Android to the car to use Android Auto, I use the Google Maps and Amazon Music and on that OS the music does lower in volume when the Google Maps speaks directions to me.

Tested CarPlay with the IOS 11 preview yesterday on my way from Italy to Bavaria. It crashed 5 times within the first 20km when I stopped using it and switched to Audi's native Audi connect navigation. Seems it needs some more improvements until we can really enjoy all features like lane guidance and speed limits. Am back on 10.3.2 until the next beta gets released .

You can use Amazon music with CarPlay. I do wish there was a way to get Siri to work with it though, kinda annoying and distracting having to use the display to do anything but change tracks.

You can actually use apple music with android,.. as long as you have not unlocked the bootloader & you are not running custom rom. Apple Music only works on default factory roms.. You can find apple music app in play store.

With IOS 11 beta 2 the speed limits are gone (in Austria) but the upper left "lane assist" was implemented/corrected and doesn't show a black empty bar (beta 1) anylonger. It's not yet a real lane assist and only shows where to turn but in a different format regarding text compared to IOS 10. And it didn't crash during 2 x 1h test drives.
Seems the REAL lane guidance is working correctly in US/UK only since beta 2.

Carplay Maps is vastly improved in beta 2. Everything seems to be working again, it's more stable, and I love how they brought back the 3D buildings view in ios11 (they are semi transparent).

I'd be overjoyed if CarPlay would stop assuming I want to hear music when I'm charging my phone and automatically start playing a random track. Even opening Facebook Messenger opens the Music App. What kind of craziness is that?!? WTH does Messenger have to do with Music?!?

Basically, I just want some control over when the music plays.

Apple is said to be working on a far more major CarOS to maybe work with future Apple Car or so .
I think we wont get any new major updates to carplay until then and i think ot will discontinue with the new CarOS they will reveal somewhere around 2019 .

I think the issue with playing music etc., and I can't speak to exactly your issue, is that carplay and your car assumes you want to do what you were doing previously. People have also found if you disconnect your phone before shutting the car off provides differences the next time you start up and start car play. Again, not sure your exact circumstances but try disconnecting before shutting car down if you don't do that.

Mind was fixed with developers version 2

The maps updates to CarPlay are so much better, especially on highways. Where it tells you your next turn it shows “x” number of lanes and highlights the lanes you can be in to make your turn.

Has anyone tested iOS 11 CarPlay with 3rd party audio apps - Overcast, Pocket Casts, Castro, NPR One, Spotify, etc? I wonder if iOS 11 improves CarPlay reliability/stability with 3rd party audio apps at all. Tabbed interfaces, especially, seem to cause connection and loading errors - so much so that Castro removed them from their app (Overcast still uses tabs but Pocket Casts might be removing them in their next release).

the only 3rd party app I use is amazon music and it worked fine for me on IOS 10 and is also working on IOS 11.
