I remember in Apple Conference that They said Apple updates in iOS 5 will just download the updated files not the whole OS all over again i also thought that will include apps.
I tried to download 5.0.1 today and its 700mb+ this is a huge issue for me since my isp will only limit me to 40gb/m .

so what went wrong? or did i understand them wrong?

OTA is not that big. <60mB IIRC.

700 MB is approximately 2% of your monthly bandwidth allotment. You can deal with it.

63MB update here. I'm not sure why you're getting 700MB?

Sounds like they are updating to 5.0.1 from iOS 4.

It is the smaller download if it's OTA to your iOS device.

To clarify what others are saying: You have to enable the update from your device, while on Wifi, to take the benefit of downloading the smaller iOS updates.

Initiating a update form iTunes will always be the full 700mb+ update.

thanx , i tried from the device, ota, but it didnt give me the download size so i used itunes to check. Why would downloading from itunes would be that much larger, doesnt make sense....will download using OTA. Would itune apps have smaller updates using OTA?

iOS5 update is 700mb , but u r not counting the mac os x update, game updates like Rage which is like another 700 mb,Lion startup partition 450mb ...u see where i am going dont you?

If you download in iTunes it is NOT OTA or Delta, it is the full firmware as it always has been since 2007.

If you update firmware on the device itself (no iTunes or computer) then it is a delta update meaning it's really small compared to the full update in iTunes.

Yeah I got it, but I want to know why did they chose not to do delta update on iTunes...would people using iTunes like to waste their time downloading 700mb ? I am sure everyone wants the smaller update
