its open to any platform? i think meaning apple, android or even windows could use it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je2lWjfpywQ

link to the video on SGSIII http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENteq-canMk

dont get me wrong i love my iPhone 4S, & will never leave apple but i wish we had something like this.

write back if you have more info on this.

true its the same, but just like facetime, airdrop is iOS only, it wont be on other platforms, unlike wi-fi direct its working its way... i mean not all my friends & family member will be geting a iphone, so on that point airdrop wont work with them.

Right, since AirDrop is OS X-only now, I expect AirDrop for iOS would only work with iOS and OS X devices.

Who knows, though. Apple has previously stated that they were going to open up FaceTime, though that was over two years ago. FaceTime and AirDrop on other devices would certainly make them more useful.

So basically an ad-hoc wifi network? As others have mentioned, something like this may be added later, but you can currently do it with MiWi or other jailbreak apps.

Wifi-Direct is a cool technology but it hasn't panned out (yet). Here's a good article explaining why:
