Can anyone point me in the right direction? I dont see any setting to limit the number of messages downloaded... It downloaded 2700 or so messages and became unusably slow... I deleted the account and re-added and its downloading again...

I've also found the same (I presume you mean emails as opposed to iMessages or text messages) - iOS6 and older allowed you to just download the previous xx number of messages, but I can't find a similar option for iOS7. I now have 10,000 items in my inbox - thankfully it's stopped there but that's still a GB or so I would have preferred to keep free
