ios9.2: Maildrop and Google email

My head is spinning trying to help someone with this, and I am not sure I am understanding what I've learned with research I've done.

My question is: Will maildrop work with only a Google email enabled in iOS9.2? Do you need an iCloud account?

Mail drop works with any email you send from any account, by my understanding is that you need to be using the stock mail app for this.
