Okay it's fine in most places although I do prefer Helvetica Neue, but the numbers are hideous! The time at the top of the screen is the worst. It feels like I jailbroke my phone and installed an ugly custom font. It looks too wide and a little too bold. Also too androidy

Many people have complained about legibility issues with Helvetica Neue in iOS 7 & 8. (Though I have no issues and in fact did not like the later increase in font weight).

SF is rather similar to Helvetica Neue, but it is further tweaked to enhance legibility at small sizes. Hence SF Compact (on WATCH), and text at small sizes with increased weight in iPhone look especially different from previous versions.

You can especially appreciate the beauty of SF when it is used as a display font at large sizes. Too bad there were so many complaints about Helvetica Neue, plus the usage of Helvetica Neue could be so easily copied by other companies.

i dont even see a difference

Surely you’re jesting. The typeface is a lot spacier. The characters may not be all that different, but overall look does. Commas and quotations are wider as well.

It’s not a beautiful typeface, but it does improve legibility. I suppose that’s the sacrifice we have to make for a system typeface.

My only gripe with the fonts is that used in the Notes app. Never used that app previously, but now that I am, I've notice that the font looks blurry.

i only know cuz i have read about it. honestly cant spot the difference, same with El Capital :D unless its times new roman or comic sans it makes no difference to me. cant even tell holding my iPad on 8.4 next to it

I disagree. While Helvetica Neue is still a beautiful font, compared to all the other fonts Apple has used in their systems, it's my least favorite.

However, nothing will beat Apple's original "Chicago" font. That is definitely my #1 favorite font.

Using the Notes app I can't tell if this is a blurry font bug or whether they are trying some sort of debossing effect. Either way it looks like a mistake. I submitted it as a bug.

And really, a paper texture?

It is an embossed effect that is present in iOS 8 as well. The text itself is not blurry.

It's been like this since iOS7..?

Neither the paper texture or debossing are new.

It's more obvious in some places than others, for example the number 7 in Helvetica has a curve while it doesn't in SF.

It might just be my design background but it's very, very different to me. The text has a different "feeling" which is hard to explain.

There are many subtle differences that overall leads to very different personalities between the two font families.
