I've tried for hours to get the handful of Lightning cables that are not MiFi certified to charge my iPhone 6 just like they have with the previous iOS'es and so far no luck. Tried to charge off of a wall charger as well as the USB port on my notebook, no dice. Will try tonight on my 2.1A car charger as well.

Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Are the days of unofficial Lightning cables for charging purposes over?

Not even. Monoprice has MFi certified cables for $6 (?) last I checked for 6 feet! Ordered two as I wasn't sure if it was a sale or not.

its a worthy change..theres no need to risk ur device for damage cause u wanted to save a few dollars on a cable. $5 or $10 more cable vs damaged phone & probably hundreds at the apple store

I buy Amazon's 6-feet cables. They usually break in a year (still, longer than Apple's) but I contact them and they overnight me a new one.

It's not about the money, I'm incredibly wealthy.

At the time when the iPhone 5 was first released, the only way to get a 5" black lightning cable was to grab them at the night market in Hong Kong whilst on a business trip over there. If they don't work I'll have to track down new ones as that size and color is what fits best in the console of my new BMW.

pu-leeese with the "I'm rich" stuff. is it really a question about the MFi? we all know the non MFi cables are wishy washy at best and subject to not working. just spend your wealth on proper cables for your new phone and BMW. And the fact you threw that extra "trophy wife" and "beach house" crap in your sig LOL. This is an mac website here, no one is comparing inches.

    HOOOO HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! HAHA!!!!!!

Oh god, I'm crying from laughter, that's amazing.

iOS 9 didn't stop you using 3rd-party cables, just crappy ones.

    You are right
I have been using my TYLT lightning cable since its launch and its still intact

Now with iOS 9 its charging like 10% in 30mins
I also tried using it with a car charger and iPad wall outlet still the same.

Look at the bottom of your iPad Power Adapter - does it say 10W or 12W?

The 5" MiFi cable has worked splendidly in my several BMW's over the past few years and it would be difficult to replace them with similar ones so small and tidy.

Aside from risking potential damage to the charging ports, that's another downside of buying non certified cables. You can easily find midi certified cables for $5-$10 on Amazon.

I did not have any luck in getting a decent charge while using the non MiFi cable with a 1A iPhone charger or my USB-C adapter's USB port.

However, using my car's 2.1A cigarette lighter adapter it charged my iPhone 6 running iOS9 in the usual fast manner.

So methinks that Apple did something to make low power on these cables less than optimal, higher power still works. Either that or the iOS update was installed but still indexing and it was draining the 1A charge as quickly as it was supplying it.

Will ask my manservant to do some more testing and report back.

Oh well in that case the solution is simple.

Just trade your BMW on something with a white interior.

If you're charging an iPad 3, 4, Air or Air 2 you need to be using a 2.1A or 2.5A power adapter. A 1A adapter is going to take aaaaaages. Check the adapter, if it's not a 2.1A or 2.5A adapter it's not the right one.

This has been the case since the iPad 3 which shipped with a 10W 2.1A USB power adapter because the battery was much, much larger than the iPad 2.

They all look the same so check the bottom of the adapter where all the regulatory info is - you should see 10W or 12W somewhere there.
