Would my IP be banned from using this site if I'm using a VPN? I can't think of any other reason it would be?

Probably if it's a free one since most spam bots use them.
Use a good private VPN and it shouldn't give you trouble w most sites.

You should always use Tor or vpn for anything you do online.
Wouldn't that essentially be along the lines of always employing spycraft techniques to avoid detection and being followed anytime you go outside even if most of that time it's for some very mundane things like just to check the mail, take out the garbage, pick up some milk, get a cup of coffee, etc.?

Its the equivalent of surgically attaching a tinfoil hat to your head.

Just like wearing pants ... and locking your house ...
Nope, Putting ALL your traffic through TOR is more like wearing a Burka for all activities outside the house, including things like swimming at the beach. Yeah, there are people who think that that is a good idea but that has more to do with their outlook on life than practicality.

Depending on the country you are in, rerouting your traffic is more or less necessary.

That's somewhat different from a generalized statement that everyone should do it for anything they do online.

It isn't necessary for everyone, but they should anyway since it doesn't have any downsides, but makes it harder to surveil people.

win-win

Do VPN's not require extra time, effort, and money? I don't know, as I don't use VPN's often, but if the answer is "yes," then they would be downsides.

Once you have everything set up, which takes about ten minutes, it does not require any more time or effort ever again.
Tor and a lot of other VPN services are free of charge.

But your traffic goes through some third party servers. And has the potential of being slower because of that as well.

Good point.

Still depends on the third party server. It also depends on what speed you have and need.
