This thread is so frustrating! :D

@ericinboston
MC706LL is the model according to General>Settings...iOS 5.1.

So you really have a Retina iPad.

Just surf with both iPads to the NYTimes. http://www.nytimes.com Or any other website with small text.

Don't zoom in. On the iPad 1 small fonts are fuzzy. One the iPad 3 small text is super clear!

If you don't see a difference please make a photograph for us. ;)

By the way:
For photo exchange I really like Apples new Photostream. On the Mac it is enabled in iPhoto '11. For Windows Apple has an "iCloud Control Panel":

I don't know about Dropbox, but I know for sure Photostream is not downsampling and you can even exchange RAW files with that.

sorry for the late reply here...I had lung surgery the other day. :(

Take care!

thanks for the test photo! So here is what I did:

1. Surfed to this forum on iPad 1 and 3 and saved your pic to the photo album
2. Then I opened the pic on each iPad for the photo album side by side.

To my eyes, they are identical or very very very very very similar. Even zooming in all the way. I have asked 2 others to look with me and they agree there is no difference.

What difference are you folks seeing with this grasshopper picture between iPad 1 and 3? I was expecting the zoom to be incredibly better on the 3 and it is not. I was expecting hi res pix like these to be much sharper and generally look better on the 3. I would be shocked to find that my great eyes cannot tell the diff between a 1024x768 resolution (iPad 1) and the very high res in the iPad 3. I've been using computer monitors at 1600x1200 for over a decade.

If others here could test the above grasshopper photo on the iPad 1 and 3 that would be great....and to be precise on what you are experiencing.

In my view, either my eyes truly cannot distinguish above 1024x768 ( any articles/stats about this? Would seem odd if us humans cannot see above this range yet the computer industry far exceeded 1024x768 back in the early 90s) or my iPad 3 is defective or I was not sold a 3 (my model reports MC706LL)

Thanks so much in advance!

P.s. I think apple should have some test photos for people to use to prove their case.

I would be heading to the eye doc, not the apple store.

As I mentioned...several other people here are "see" the same thing on both devices.

I think the answer is that you are NOT going to see a difference in photos between the 1 and 3. Sure, there may technically be some difference such as better hues or something else that most of us non-photographers cannot detect on the average 3-second glance on a photo slideshow.

I think both screens show my 14MP pix very nicely...I just thought I would see a major difference...and there is not...and others on this thread have confirmed that. The difference, it seems, is when reading/viewing text...where you no longer see the pixels or the jagged edges.

Anyway, I seem to be all set but I guess I was incorrectly setting myself up to see super stunning photos on the iPad 3 when it's *basically* the same appearance/experience on both devices.

Just get over it dude if YOU can't tell the difference then jus return it and be done with it. Problem solved. The original iPad was what 720 p or so the iPad 3 is double that. But really a picture can only look so good to anyone. We're you expecting fireworks to go off in the background? Everything is just much cleaner and sharper.

Weird topic, just look all the text in web pages, MUCH sharper, if text's arent sharper then something wrong with your iPad. Its harder to see the difference with photos, because most of the photos just arent that sharp!

Cant you see the difference in colours in pictures? New iPad makes photos look very vibrant and lively, photos are popping out of the screen :)
