Yeah, that's a little vague. When it says "iPad with retina display" do they mean both the iPad 3 and 4? I assume so, but currently the iPad 4 is the only iPad on Apple's site that is called "iPad with retina display".

I wouldn't put it past Apple to screw over iPad 3 owners yet again.

If ios8 struggles on the iPad 3; it may be a blessing rather than a screw over...

My ipad 2 runs ios 7 very well, and I have been continually restoring from the same backup each time I have updated since I got my iPad. Heck my battery is still going strong. I'm on 4 percent now and I've gotten 15 hours and 46 minutes of usage and 4 days and 16 hours of standbye, and the ipad has not been plugged in since the last full charge.

Some people seem to be annoyed that the ipad 2 has been supported. If it runs well like some have reported, why wouldn't it be supported? Mine cost an arm and a leg so I think it's perfectly fair for it to be supported. Plus it's only fair to those who bought them only 2 months ago.

How did iPad 3 owners get screwed the first time?

It came out just before the lightning cables, overheated, and a few other issues ( I heard)

I ask because I had the iPad 3 and had no issues with it. The cable should not even be an as the iPad still works with the old cable.

Hmm, I don't recall overheating issues and I still have mine. The only issues I can recall were: It takes longer to charge because of the larger battery, it will run warmer when pushed due to running graphically intensive games but they don't get hot and the performance was less than desirable because of the A5X pushing more pixels.

Won't happen. Don't get your hopes up. iOS 7 is terrible on the iPad 2 in my experiences. Even the third gen struggles a ton.

I think iOS 7 runs better on the 2 than the 3... Not sure why, but my iPad 2 runs iOS 7 pretty smooth, even with heavy games like IB3.

The iPad 3 was released with a processor that was a bit too slow to handle the retina screen. That's why Apple released the iPad 4 out of the normal cycle-- and immediately discontinued the 3 -- so that the performance issue would be mitigated. My iPad 3 works fine for what I do with it, but its slower than it should be and there is a noticeable difference between the iPad 4. This was talked about at length here when the iPad 4 was released. There are several threads about it.

It would be a screw over because once Apple cuts off the iOS updates its only a short matter of time before we stop getting updates for apps -- and then some of them will stop working altogether.

If the iPad 3 doesn't get the update that means the older model iPad 2 will actually have a longer usable life--which isn't right.

For everyone concerned about the iPad 3 getting the update, it never was called the iPad 3, it was "iPad with Retina Display" this device is supported by iOS 8 wouldn't be surprised if the iPad 2 & 3 are both going to get iOS 9 as well, and that will be their final OS update or maybe 8.1

It was just called the "new iPad" and then the iPad 4 was called "iPad with Retina Display" so the change must have been made recently as the iPad 3 is obviously no longer the newest iPad, hence the confusion.

Yes, basically I think Apple is pretending there isn't an iPad 3 haha

The iPad 3 and 4 are both considered the "iPad with Retina Display"

Really? Because that just sounds confusing and I've never heard anyone call the 3 the retina one, because that's what the 4 is called. Even if the 3 has retina people just call it the 3. I don't understand why apple didn't just stick with numbers. :p

The iPad 3 introduced the Retina display to the lineup. The 4th Gen iPad added nothing new except the Lightning port and a very minor processor bump that really makes no drastic improvement.
