There is no Japanese symbols for Facetime and Smart Cover. It must be very confusing for the Japanese consumer that doesn't know English to see a foreign language sprinkled in the native text.

I hope Apple will come out a way to prevent people from buying and then reselling the newly launched devices in some other countries at a much escalated price. It is so unfair for the locals

The Japanese language is one huge mish-mash of two alphabets, 1000's of kanji, and hundreds of words 'imported' from different languages around the world....
Random english words is a part of daily life...though the meaning and usage often gets changed...wont be too long before you'll get "I've invited some friends for a facetime at the bar tonight"

Pretty much everyone in Japan can read roman characters in addition to Japanese characters. Lots of advertising copy in Japan uses roman type, so, no, it's not confusing.

"お待たせしました!" is very close to an apology! I wonder if we'll get apologized to in English?

Maybe you are in another Japan from the one I live in that had the major earthquake/tsunami/mutliple nuclear meltdowns that meant everyones attention was somewhat distracted....
Nope, same Japan. You know, the one where the #1 selling smartphone launched two days after the big earthquake and nobody seemed to mind. Or the Optimus Pad, which launched on March 31st. Oh, and the Xperia Arc SO-01C, which launched on March 24th. This is the Japan I live in, the one where for most of the country it's business as usual. Not to make light of the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami, which is obviously tragic - I'm just saying that most companies have been launching products with minimal delays despite the events of the past month, whereas Apple clearly hasn't. Hence my comment about the iPad 2's delayed launch: IT'S ABOUT TIME. ;)

They don't seem to struggle with the words "iPad" or "Apple," do they? Somehow I think they'll manage.

And the iPhone 4s already were selling like hotcakes, no?

I'm sure the people who live in Tokyo (on this forum) can give more accurate opinions, but on my last visit, I was struck by how few people seemed to have the iPhone. Everyone seemed to have these longer flip-phones, mostly white/silver colored ones.

Japan historically having been at the forefront of mobile telephony, it was an odd sight not to see more iPhones around. So, yes, hotcakes by any other country's standards, but not really in terms of the potential market size in Japan. But I do think the white one will do markedly better than the black one.

Sorry but I am usually blissfully ignorant when products I have no interest in are launched, but especially in the last few weeks. Even more impressed with Apple's position now you mention these other companies.

I would agree. Prior to the iPhone 4 there didn't appear to be many iPhone users in Tokyo. Since the release of the iPhone 4 that has changed. They're quite the ubiquitous must-have item in Tokyo these days.

I half-thought about that possibility, since my visit to Tokyo was in July and the iPhone 4 was just getting rolled out.

So, do you think the white iPhone will have even more traction? Just curious, since I noticed how all the cars seemed to lean toward white/silver too, whereas here in the US you see many more darker colors around.

The iPad2 release has been reported on Japanese TV news this morning, but still nothing on the Apple Store website. Also, I didn't get my email from Apple telling me it was released (they had a system on the Apple Store website where you could register for such notification).

You're now even more impressed with the unnecessary delay? Interesting.

And for the record, I don't particularly care about product launches, either. I simply did a thirty second google search to find those post-earthquake launches I posted to show that for Japanese companies, it's been business as usual since the quake (as far as launching new products goes). Apple's delay didn't benefit anyone other than themselves (limited availability as it was - they probably thought there was no need to stretch supplies even further) ... But if their thinly-disguised maneuvering gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling, I suppose that's exactly what they intended.

Yeah, iPhones are EVERYWHERE these days. Also, Android has really taken off as well.

Wow.... I like the way you say 'you're not trying to make light of what's happened', and then go on to moan that they didnt release the iPad out of respect to the victims. Sounds very much like. "I'm fine, so f**k everyone else".
....yes in most of the country life carries on, but some people are obviously helping out more than others.
