I stayed up all night trying to order the iphone 4 to no avail. I woke up early the next day and was finally able to get one through. It was a long night but totally worth it.

But how fast was the shipping? Enquiring minds want to know.

If I remember correctly preorders went up two weeks before it was shipped/released. So I had to wait two weeks. But it was freaking awesome when mine came a day before the official release date. I felt like a VIP or something :D.

That's not bad. Perhaps that augers well for iPad 2 orderers.

On the other hand... If they are contending with so many people ordering it at once, plus trying to get a bunch of them to stores on the same day, those of us inclined order online might have to wait a few days.

Ah well, that is what beer and the Internet is for.

Yes. Beer and internet is very useful for wasting time waiting for new toys.

I guess my earlier post didnt really answer your question: The total time from when the tracking number was emailed to me to when the iphone got dropped off at my door was about three days. So I think it's fair to say that's the time we're looking at with the ipad. I would love to have mine come Saturday, but to prepare the shipments AND have them travel to our front door in one day is wishful thinking at best. Oh well...Monday or Tuesday will be Christmas morning for us.

Thanks, that's just the sort of thing I was looking for. It's also pretty much what I figured would happen after your earlier post.

Now I guess I know what I'll be doing come Friday, until it arrives: chewing nervously on my fingernails while drinking beer and hitting the refresh button every two minutes on ICanHazCheezburger.com.

I think they'll do FedEx overnight with Saturday delivery for the first day of orders. I think they'll have them stocked at their warehouses for the initial orders and not use IP Direct Distribution. What did they do with the original iPhone? It wasn't available for online pre-order either.

You really can't compare Original iPhone launch to the iPad 2 launch.. Two different fields!

Well where are these iPads being shipped from? Is it china like all their other products? Or are these things sitting stateside?

Ordering online -- 00:01 on the 11th

I talked to an Apple rep (and other people have as well) and it appears that it's very likely that the iPad 2 will be up for ordering at 00:01 on the 11th.

No way am I standing in line. But I want to know, how fast is the shipping? The Apple rep I spoke to suggested that it would take a while to get them out (he even seemed to say that it might not arrive until the following Friday or Saturday, a week after launch).

Do you think they'll have 1-day shipping options available? How fast will we be able to get our iPads when ordering online?

I will try to get one in person rather than pay the same price to order online and wait up to a week longer to receive it.

In the past, they've used FedEx IP Direct Distribution where the launch product was sitting on pallets at FedEx sorting facilities until the launch day. That's why Apple was able to deliver pre-ordered items on launch day. However, they can't use that service since orders won't start until Friday.

About the best they can do is ship them to Apple warehouses (CA, TN, PA, etc) and priority overnight them for Saturday delivery.

We haven't really had a lot of major products that weren't available for launch day delivery. I've personally ordered countless OS X upgrades (10.3, 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6), new iPods, Apple TVs, iPhones and the iPad that were all delivered on the launch day.

The lack of pre-ordering is odd for Apple. The only two major products I can think of that weren't available for pre-order was the original iPhone (At the time, the Apple Store began taking orders on launch day) and the 3G (which didn't get online ordering until months later -- in fact it was probably the most botched launch of all since AT&T or Apple had to actually open your iPhone for you and register your device through iTunes).

that doesn't help anyone who wants it on march 11th.

Helps people who want it on the first shipment. If all previous iPhone and iPad launch and pre-order dates are any indication, I would expect shipping times to quickly slip before the first 24 hours are even up.

So sorry, I didn't see that one.

My main question at this point is how soon we'll be able to have it delivered..

The no pre-order situation is odd, and I really wonder how they will be handling it. I highly doubt they would do overnight shipping....I know businesses get their own special pricing but demand will be high and imagining tens of thousands of iPads with charge-free priority shipping sounds outrageous to me, even for a company like Apple.

I'll think conservative for now and expect mine on Monday or Tuesday since I live in California, assuming they have them prepped in domestic warehouses, as you mention. That way, if they do go priority overnight, it will be a nice pleasant surprise visit by FedEx on a lovely Saturday :D

Got saturday delivery on my iPad 1, although it took them a week to actually ship it. That's why I'm going to stay up.

How about other dealers than Apple? Anyone got news about shipping options and delivery times?
