iPad 2 backup/update issues

my iPad 2 is running 4.3.5. time to update, but here's the problem: when i try to update the operating system, i get the message "there are purchased items that have not been transferred to your itunes library..." etc so...i perform the backup to itunes, try the update again only to get greeted with the above message AGAIN. of course i could just do the update but the computer tells me that anything not backed up will be deleted. fwiw, the backup computer is an intel imac from 2007 running 10.6.8, running iTunes 11.0.4

Chose the download option and update later
Plug your iPad directly into the computer
Transfer purchases to iTunes
Sync to backup
Backup the computer files
Turn off the computer power saver so it doesn't shut down during the upgrade.

thanks. in my haste i was under the impression that synching was supposed to save my purchases. problem solved.
