iPad 2 can't factory reset

I was given a iPad 2 with the Verizon option. It had been dropped and the screen was broken (glass and would not recognize touch). Replaced the glass and touch works now but the on off switch quit working. Checked the on off cable and all looks good. And also the passcode screen doesn't appear anymore. All it says is ipad locked and connect to iTunes. Well I did but it's not giving me the option to factory wipe it. Is there a way to short the battery to reset it? At this point it is useless. I have the digitizer and lcd off again and rechecking all cables.

iPad is a A1397 EMC2424

Google "iPad DFU," and see if you can get it into DFU mode.

thanks NS but I decided to just change out the on/off cable.
