Typically you can get a used version for at or a little above the ebook price... But with a paper copy you get to resell it after the class is over so you usually get at least 50% back.

But there are times when the convenience would cover the cost... Some textbooks are rentable too, which is cheaper. Amazon offers some for 30 bucks for 60 days. (Hint, you can use your iPad to take pictures of each page, then make a pdf out of them.... then you'll have a permanent copy).

So it just depends on how much you'd like the convenience. A lot of the most expensive ebooks are also the largest and most cumbersome (aka the ones that would be great to just have on your iPad).

Also keep in mind that these are electronic files...... you know like music... and as everyone knows, it's impossible to get music online without paying for it... right??

:p

textbooks are a difficult issue, especially when you get into monographs and so forth that either are not ebooks, or are sold for outrageously high prices (sometimes for hundreds of dollars).

please read the links i posted earlier in the thread for ideas on how to handle this by digitizing the materials yourself.

if you go that route you only get a PDF which is ok. Ideally IMO textbooks would be interactive. with embedded videos, audio and quizzes.

Granted, that would be nice. But the OP clearly just wants electronic versions of the class textbook... And while interactive features would be 'nice', they certainly wouldn't be taken advantage of by most classes since 99.9 percent of students in the class are probably using the paper book....

And if you CAN find the free PDFs, then saving 50-150 dollars certainly outweighs a few videos or whatever. Stuff you can find on your own online if you really want to supplement the teacher's required readings.
