Even before the A5 was released, as soon as the word got around it'd probably use the SGX543MP2 (the rumor has been around for a while), it was already pretty much known that the A5 would beat Tegra2 easily in graphics. The only question was by how much and whether the CPU performance would be any different. The answer: by a lot, no the CPUs seem pretty close, if not almost identical. I'll be interested to see specific FPU and multimedia performance test in the future.

Anandtech have FPU benchmarks in their preview and in summary the A5 is a lot faster than the A4. They suggest that this is probably down to the pipelined FPU in the Cortex A9.

Memory bandwidth is also significantly improved. Taking everything together the A5 seems like a really impressive piece of hardware.

That YouTube or videos thing, with the curved wall, was there a point to that? Looking at the videos of that, it looked like a "because we can" sort of thing to me. It made my inner ear hurt.

Apple did the same thing back in the day with Apple TV.

Seriously, this is for all those guys who are so focused on 'specs.'

A5 is a beast.

WINNING.

All the Xoom-bashing aside, (why do we even care about it in this thread?)

What really matters is how and when the games will take advantage of the new GPU.

Does this mean Infinity Blade with free roaming mode with other characters? (Shenmue-like??) Will there are some big blockbuster titles with truly console-like budget and production value to take the full advantage of all the power available? Will Apple TV get games? The potential here is extremely intriguing.

LOL instead of bashing the iPad 2 they are bashing the testing, themselves, and the fact they they have a product that shipped with firmware that didn't match the hardware! oh Im glad I buy my stuff from a company that makes the hardware and software!

It's getting back on track :D

I have the ipad2 and love it, but I really really like the xoom, and theres nothing wrong with that....

A few more updates for honeycomb, and I think it'll run real smooth! Looks like I'll be adding fart apps to both! Lol

I have the Xoom and love it, it is a fantastic device. I've also been really interested in the ipad2, and have vicariously enjoyed the craziness of the launch on this forum. If I had the disposable income, I would love to own both. In the end, the Xoom fits my needs a little better at the moment.

The ipad beats the xoom in graphics benchmarks, the xoom has double the ram, the ipad has more quality "tablet" apps, we could go back and forth with pros and cons for both sides, the fact is being a fanboy of either side just means that you don't take the time to properly do any research.

Is it too much to be happy with your device, and also be happy for others that bought a great competitors device? For you ipad owners, the existence of some competition in the tablet market means that apple will need to continue to innovate, which is great for everyone.

Shhh, stop making sense and being reasonable. This is the internet. There's only room for fanatics.

im reading around right now, and someone put up a good point. the xoom has a higher resolution, so it uses more processing power to keep up that resolution. that explains a lot.

Did you even read my original post? The Xoom has ~30% more pixels, yet the iPad 2 GPU is ~100-400% faster depending on the game/benchmark. Clearly the SGX543MP2 is way faster than Tegra 2.

Don't mention this over at the xoom forum. They'll get all riled up. I don't get it, I have seen some iPad fans who are loyal and all but Xoom guys...wow. Anyone who has something on the negative side when it comes to a xoom and talks about it gets torn a new bum hole over there.

Odd... As I thought it had been proven that it was just the opposite.

you guys are worse than the xoom forum guys

And what about you? 100 percent of your posts are about the Xoom and how great it is. For some reason you do this at an apple website. Then you make remarks like this about the posts here. Just incredible.

So Im a Xoom user...here we go:

You need to compare the Xoom to the 1st Gen Ipad or wait to let both Motorola and Android mature enough in this genre, what your doing is comparing apples to oranges here. I'm not talking about phones, we know Motorola's been in it for some time with phones. Apple's had their hand in the tablet market for some time now. You all gloat as if this is a fair fight. Its not. Apple's had the chance to "get it right" after their first gen iPad. Fact is, Apple made a kick ass iPad 2. No doubt, their biggest downfall is the fact you cannot install squat without letting them know what your doing! What do I mean? Try to install a piece of software on an unjailbroken iPad2 that isn't being done through their store front...wont happen. Some may not see the problem here, but just look back 10 years when Apple helped spearhead the lawsuits against Microsoft regarding the so called "Monopoly" they put on their OS, seems to me Apple's doing the same thing. (Back on track) It is actually a complement to hear some of the stuff floating around in regards to Xoom vs iPad2 forums. I'd say on their first attempt, Motorola made a damn fine piece of equipment. I love both products, just love the Xoom a tad more.

I'd point you all over to a website that show's a different number score in benchmarks for both systems, but I cant with you iPad users....its in flash! (Bash)((I know, I know, flash does not = win, but had to do it sorry!))

Love the discussion. Almost had me packing up my Xoom for an Ipad2 but I think Apple's got enough of my money, as I do love my iPod Touch 4g!

While what you mentioned does make some sense, I think Apple got it right the first time around with the original iPad. The biggest difference between the two right now seems to be the amount of time developers have had to write stuff for the darn thing. Given some more time for developers to catch up and for Google to streamline the app store a bit, I think Android Tablets may become pretty formidable contenders.

the xoom was released feb17, 2011. the ipad 2 was released less than a month later.

i can't go claiming that the current generation (october 2010) macbook air should be compared to lenovo's 2009 ultralight laptops.

the fact is apple beat everyone to the punch by a year and google should have been working on a tablet os before apple announced theirs.

I think Apple got it right on their 1st tablet as well, I also thing Motorola got it right on their 1st tablet. But I can't see how some of the hardcore apple users can claim the iPad2 beats the Xoom on every front, when apple's the "experienced" fighter in this match. I can sit here on my Xoom and do 100 different things that the iPad can't do. Likewise I love the iPad/iPod apps. I agree with your statement that over time the Android based tables will rise to a level that puts the pressure on Apple. But in my opinion the Xoom is a good contender. Thanks for the response. Very respectable.

Well said. Apple did something that broke ground. Now everyone will always follow.

Really, Id say that Nokia was the first of this trend with the Maemo based 770.
Size, lack of cellular hurt. What made the ipad/ipod touch/iphone was a cap touchscreen. That was the real innovation since resistive wasnt good without a stylus (and no multitouch)
