We need new Ipad because of wearing out home button. It is my wife's, can she go from an app to the home screen of apps without hitting home button?

Of course she can, just use assistive touch (https://support.apple.com/en-vn/HT202658).

You can also use 4 or 5 finger pinch to go from an app to the home screen as long as Gestures are enabled in the General settings.

Just found this feature, but you have to press the power button and then only touch the home button.
