So it looks like 8.0.2 is still not good on IPad2 if I'm reading these right. I think the hardware is just to old and not enough RAM to handle it?

I think the iPad 2 is still up to it, but iOS 8 is just not optimised. I've seen it lag on an iPhone 6 so that would give you an idea. The iPad 2 and Mini combined have around 50 percent of the iPad installed base, so I think Apple would be quite interested in getting iOS 8 to a state where it runs reasonably.

iOS 8 on the iPad 2 and other A5 devices is not as bad as iOS 7 on the iPhone 4, it just needs optimisation.

I'd suggest by 8.0.4 and then 8.1 we'll be seeing some genuine improvement.

Yes, used for about 5 days or so. Just could not get over the delays on safari web pages, and overall sluggishness of the os.

did a backup restore, along with a fresh install. Similar results on both.
Downed back to 7.1.2, but lost my backups :(.

Anyhow, your review was delightful. Nice work.

Thanks for the compliment :)

I found Safari to be the most annoying part of iOS 8 on the iPad 2. Heck it even runs terribly on the iPad 4 and Air. It needs serious work!

Thanks!

The Mini should be about the same as the iPad 2, but slightly better as it is pushing less pixels. Did you do a clean install? Also did you wait 48 or so hours?

The iPad mini 1st gen and iPad 2 have the same screen resolution - 1024x768 so they push the same number of pixels. The iPad mini should perform slower since it has all the blur effects enabled as opposed to the iPad 2 which has a simple transparent interface.

I agree with you and by the time 8.0.4 show up I'll probably have a new IPad so that it's optimized to work with my Mac.

The IPad2 is built like a tank and has been one of the finest products I haver ever bought from Apple.

Yes the iPad 2 has been nothing short of incredible. I actually bought mine the weekend the iPad 3 came out, and I still feel even now I've got my moneys worth, and I intend on keeping it till at least 2016!

I'll try my best tomorrow to do one for you all for the iPhone 5 :) (lets hope 7.1.2 is still being signed tommorow!)

Awesome! Thanks! I believe 7.1.2 much snappier than ios 8 in my experience on my 5. I had 8 installed for 2 days and I was so annoyed with the slowdown (and bugs) that I reverted back. Safari loaded pages slower. The App Store had a second or two lag when loading up. And it seemed like less apps were able to remain suspended in the background. And my battery life over LTE was super terrible! I really liked some of the new features but a fast non buggy system outweighed staying up to date for me! It will be interesting to see what you find!

Yeah I'm sure its a little slower tbh... :/

Wops I stand corrected!!

Maybe Apple just optimises its software for the Mini 1 better? iOS 7 and iOS 8 seem to run better on the Mini than the iPad 2 :p

Well just to chime in, I installed 8.0.2 (fresh) on my iPad 2 and its absolutely fine. I disabled Background App Refresh completely and a few location services like...

System Services;

Location-Based iAds OFF
Share my Location OFF
Frequent Locations OFF
Diagnostics and Usage OFF
Popular Near Me OFF

That's it. I watched Netflix last night, read the news this morning and its good. Keep one thing in mind Safari is not something I use a lot on the iPad, so I am not a good reference for that, however I read this forum and the Apple home page/Communities no problem.

One last thing, when you first start after installing, applications are real slow to start, give things a chance to get cached before you judge performance.

They've stopped signing iOS 7.1.2 :/ So sorry, I won't be able to do a performance review :(

Just my $.02,
I installed 8.0 on my iPad2 a couple of days after it came out by doing a restore through iTunes, rather than an OTA update and overwriting 7.1.2.
All of the success stories I had read to that point seemed to indicate that this was the way to go, rather than installing directly over ios7.

I missed the 8.0.1 update, and installed 8.0.2 OTA right when it came out.

My observations are that the speed of 8.0 was about on par with 7.1.2, except for the application switcher which is slightly slower than it was in ios7, but we are talking about maybe 100-200 milliseconds delay so it wasn’t a deal-breaker for me.

First thing I did was I turned off “app background updates” and all the iBeacon ad junk, and my iPad2 feels pretty similar in speed to what 7.1.2 did.

When I ran the 8.0.2 update I was secretly hoping for a little speed boost, but to me the speed feels about the same as 8.0 did.

There was definitely a performance hit going from ios6 to ios7, but from what I’ve seen, by doing a clean install of ios8 on my iPad2, ios8 feels about the same sluggishness which I’ve been accustomed to running 7.1.2.

Overall I’m happy with the update since everything seems to work same as it did on ios7, but (although I know it’s never going to happen) it would be nice to get some of the speed of ios6 back again. :(

Hopefully this helps.

- Jay

Thnaks! Thats interesting to hear. My OTA iOS 8 update was as slow as hell, but the clean install seemed to be all right. I'm sure if I had more time to let it settle + disable unnecessary things it would have been even better.

I made a thread whining about how terrible the performance was on the iPad 2 after I OTA updated, then I restored as new and it was great...that'll teach me.

Yeah! I noticed a massive difference between the two. If only you could copy things manually to a new restore instead of having to restore from backup!
