My iPad 2 is now charging when plugged into USB after installing iOS 5 and it did not previously. I assume this is happening to everyone else, but I can't see where anyone is mentioning it.

My iPad (both 1 and 2) always charged from USB. However, the USB had to be a high powered one (like on a Mac). It wouldn't work off of some USBs or port extenders.

Weird - Mine never did until the OS 5 update. I absolutely did NOT change the USB port (directly into the powered port in back of my computer) or cables. I wonder why that is?

perhaps what your seeing is what i have...

my ipad will charge off my mac's USB port if its dead, and up to a maximum of 10%, after that it stops charging and says Not Charging in the ipad menubar.

This didnt do this on ios4.

My MBA has always charged my iPads, both 1 and 2. I know PCs didn't before, do they now with IOS 5?

It took so long to install iOS 5 on release night that after I got my iPhone updated I left my iPad 2 downloading and updating on its own while I slept. When I woke up it was updated successfully and fully charged to 100% which it was not when I left it. Pretty cool! :D

That must be it as I'm on a Win 7 PC. This is very cool then if I can now charge my iPad 2 via USB!

The iPad ALWAYS charges from USB.

The only reason why it says "Not charging" is that a regular 500mA USB port charges the iPad *so slowly* that it would take something like 20 hours to recharge fully from it. So they don't want users to think it's charging at a reasonable rate. It's still charging, though, just extremely slowly.

Newer Macs have USB ports that can deliver 1A, so they'll charge the iPad at a reasonable rate, but still not as fast as the dedicated iPad charger, which supplies 2A.

You may be right. I've never left it on there as long because it always says "Not charging" but just left it updating. I have a home grown Win7 Ultimate based on an eVGA 680i motherboard so it's getting a bit long in the tooth.

Apple has always, to the best of my knowledge, stated that you should not use the keyboard USB port to run any device that required power.

It depends. When plugged into some of the newer Macs that have high power USB ports, the keyboard ports become full power USB ports. (500mA) This makes it okay.

It'll charge an iPhone, but an iPad is too much for it. 20-30 hours to charge one; there's no point. :)

Flash drives, mouse receivers and the like are fine, they don't use that much even though they are powered off of USB, but I wouldn't put an iPhone or iPod on there unless you just want to sync- who knows how much power it is actually going to get. That's also the first place I'd look if there were USB problems....

mine has always charge through USB (since 4.3.5)
it still says it's not charging it (5), but it is... just very slowly. I can see a battery life increase if I keep the iPad plugged for a long time, say an hour.
