No comparison... MBP for sure. The iPad would not be able to carry your load during university. It's better as a companion.

Of course you should get the MPB. iPad 2 is good for reading, but I doubt most of your books will be available on your iPad.
Now on your MBP you can install Microsoft office 2011, and it has a notepad mode - perfect for classes. And you can do a lot more on your computer than on your iPad 2. (I have both).

mmm that's a fancy planner there.

15" MBP is so much more versatile and you'll really really regret having to make a powerpoint presentation on your iPad should you go that route.

MBP for sure.

Thanks once again for the opinions everyone has haven given me. I've asked one of my friends in Hong Kong to order a 15inch high end MBP for me and carry it over when he flys back to Australia. Reason why I ordered in HK was because it's way way cheaper than where i'm at in Australia (even after the education pricing with an HP Printer).

Oh, and to those who mentioned the free iPod Touch deal....yeah i kind of missed that offer which ended on March 28th. We've had our turn of summer already which was during Christmas! (I know...our Santa comes during the summer, weird right?)

I have the iMac - iPad combo, however I am about to add an MBP 13" to the set.

I can do all my heavy work at home then access it all via the iPad whilst utilising the iPad as a consumption device, I also have iPhone 4.

I do need the MBP though as I am about to start Digital DJ'ing again and need the portability and userbility of the MBP. Or even the MBA would be quite nice. As long as it is used as a dedicated DJ machine and not overtasked in other areas.

lol, you could probably do just fine with a regular white MacBook. I mean, even for games that would totally kick the butt of whatever you're using right now if it's 6 years old XD

The 15" high end will be total kick ass ;)

If it were me ...
I need the video power in the MBP for video processing etc.
But if you just need a great notebook, I'd get the 13" Air.

The weight, battery life and instant-on performance are all better suited to use at university.

I disagree with people saying an iPad is a content consumption device only. I believe with-in 5 year the majority of people will being device more close to an iPad then a notebook. At lest for personal use.

However, at lest for now, even if you go full-on iPad for everything you can, (which is 95 of what 95% of what most people use a desktop for,) you will still need a conventional computer at times, (initial config, updating iOS, backups, at a minimum.)

You will also being pushing the adaptation of a new way of doing things. Sometimes this is painful, many times this inconvenient.

An iPad isn't ready to takeover Colleges/Universities yet so unfortunately as others have said, it cannot be your only computer.

I'd highly recommend a desktop/iPad combo as typically IF you use your computer in class it's to type notes and wouldn't conflict much.

Otherwise I think the 13"/iPad combo is good. I have the 15" and sometimes it gets on my nerves to lug to class, but I'm waiting for my iPad 2 to ship  And if you're worried about screen size you could always get an ext. monitor down the road.

*As a note, I'm a sophomore and I'm planning to switch over to iPad/MacBook Air for class (I have to have a computer in class, CS major) and then a desktop at home eventually over the next year.
