I'm cross-posting this here as I don't seem to be having much luck in the iPad forum.

If I have photos synced over from Photos to my iPad, will they be copied over at a higher resolution/file size on the Air 2 and Pro 9.7 compared to the iPad 2? If so, how much difference?

I had a 64GB iPad 2 with probably 40GB of photos on it. I've got a lot more photos now.
I don't want to get a new 128GB Air 1/Pro 9.7 and be shocked that it won't hold the same 40GB of photos.

I'm only looking to sync optimised photos over from my Mac, no iCloud syncing, photos from my DSLR.

    Thanks.

No. Your photos are the same size regardless of the vessel that holds them.

With the resolution of the iPad Air 2/Pro 9.7 being 2,048x1,536 compared to the iPad 2's 1,024x768, I would have automatically though the file sizes would be bigger to display a picture, and lets not forget about zooming in on a picture.

If the resolution of your image is 1,024x768 it's staying 1,024x768. Period.

I know Apple says they're devices are magical and all, but they're not magical enough to improve the resolution of images.

Apple's own iTunes sync "optimised" photo size when copied to the iPad 2 will be greater than 1024x768 for viewing and for zooming in, right?. With the iPad Air 2/Pro the optimised photo sizes will be bigger because of the increase in screen resolution, right?

The photos taken on my DSLR are 20MP uncropped, so they're going to be a bit bigger than 1024x768 when copied across.

Oh, my apologies. I don't know anything about their 'optimised' syncing razzamatazz. I do everything manually.

No problem. Seems like no one can answer this at the moment. With all things being proportional, I'm guessing file sizes will be four times greater on the iPad Air 2 and Pro 9.7 if resolution is anything to go by. That means my original 40GB of optimised pictures will become 160GB. Would love to speak to someone at Apple directly about this.

I am guessing that if you sync afresh from photos, it will re-optimise for the target device - Air 2. If you restore the contents of your ipad 2 onto the air 2 and it doesnt do the re-optimise step, i.e. restore from icloud backup, then they will stay the same resolution and not be optimised for air 2 display. The best thing would be to sync fresh from photos to get them rescaled.

I recommend going to an Apple store and talking to a genius. They will be able to answer it.
