I'm not particularly surprised to hear there are display shortages. Display shortages appear to be a chronic issue. I am, however, surprised about the speaker shortage. I don't remember hearing that be a hold-up with an Apple product before. Do we know much about the new iPad 2 speaker? I've assumed that Apple doesn't care much about the internal speaker, and assumed it would pick something simple, cheap and not in high demand. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

Don't speakers use a small amount of rare earth metals? Could the speaker shortage be related to Chinese-imposed restrictions on these materials?

The demand was short because so many people wanted it. That's the only reason. If nobody wanted it the demand would not have been short no matter how many production faults there were, I can guarantee.

+1
don't see any 'part shortages' being reported for Playbooks or Xooms

Still the same 7 iPad 2's (Black) at my local Wal-Mart that were there last Wednesday. :D

But I suppose living in the arsehole of the world has something to do with it. The hicks here in possum holler aren't big on high-tech gizmos. (unless you count 8-track tape decks )

speaker issue?

I noticed a speaker issue on my ipad 2 - it's installed facing back of unit.

Car tires move in circles, as do jet engines, but they bring us hundreds of miles ;) Adam Smith and John Nash were smart guys on capitalism, and I like it :)

Yeah, it's easy to love when you're on the forward edge of it.
Just hope to hell you never experience the other side...

You gotta love this:

We're here in Japan dealing one of the most significant natural disasters of the past century, yet business-as-usual goes on.

Yeah, it would make me kind of sad if a team of Apple experts assessing the factory damage arrived earlier than the Red Cross to free people from the rubble, for example.

So, apple sold 5 million ipad 2s in Q2. These greedy and idiot people were expecting 7 million....

Yeah that was my thought too lol. How many did they expect them to make.... definitely a case of them trying to save face over their stupid rumor.

Well I have seen that most iPad2's do have a glow in the dark screen problem.
Radiation?

You have used 1000 iPad2's and none of them have had any screen bleed issues.

OMG...... LOL

None of them :)
I still have about 450 left to unbox and register for our school though, so there still may be one or two with a bleeder.

Sorry, but I don't believe you, if you want the honest truth.

Unless you have bought 1000 from a brand new production line off Apple, I cannot accept what you are saying.
Unless you are actually saying, at school, under daylight/bright artificial light, and without changing any settings, you have not noticed it yet.

Sorry, but based on everything I've read and seem, this is just very hard to believe. No, scrub that, it's impossible end off.

I also work in the tech area in my school. Our university has purchased hundreds that I handle daily and I haven't noticed an issue either.

iSuppli - these were the same guys originating the story that supply issues were due to Japan catastrophe. They are just saving face in light of Apple quarterly report. When the truth comes out again next quarter, they'll adjust to it again... and so it goes...

I don't have any idea of who listens to isuppli or how they make their money.

Publishing the ipad2 has material costs of $ 1.79 or $ 3.28 fro the 64GB Wifi model does nothing for anybody.

Although there always some brainiacs who take their word as gospel and think that the difference is the profit Apple makes.

May I suggest both you and "coder12" make large postings on the MacRumours site, explaining where these perfect iPad2's are being supplied from as there are people over there who have literally given up getting one without backlight bleeding after trying many different replacements and are now just waiting in the hope that they can exchange them in the future for one that's ok.

I'm sure these people would love to hear where your perfect ones are being supplied from. Perhaps you could even contact one of these many people yourself and offer them some assistance as you have hundreds of fault free ones.

I'm certain they would be incredibly grateful.

I guess display problems could hint to light bleed.

So no "You're looking at it wrong" comments from SJ.

I just put an order for an iPad 2 in this Monday. I won't mind a delay if that means that I will get a more uniform screen with less backlight bleed.

Well I have seen that most iPad2's do have a glow in the dark screen problem.
Radiation?

None of the 1000 I've used so far have had anything like that, no bleeds or 'nothin! They seem just like the 1's screens in all colors and brightnesses. It sounds like I may be very lucky :p

OMG...... LOL

I am on my 3rd iPad 2 going on 4th and EVERY SINGLE F&#$ING one has SEVERE back light bleeding! I am a HUGE Apple fan and I am EXTREMELY disappointed!

I have formed a personal relationship with the senior manager at the local Apple Store and the staff there pretty much flat out told me that EVERY iPad 2 they see has backlight bleeding problems!

I am happy to see that Apple is aware of this and working to correct it. I am NOT happy that Apple is shipping MILLIONS of iPads with DEFECTIVE screens! Antenna Gate was one thing, I never have had issues with that, but the iPad 2 screens are DEFECTIVE PERIOD!

I will not stop exchanging mine until I get an iPad with a screen that is NOT defective. And I expect compensation for the IMMENSE inconvenience and having to drive a long distance going on 4 times now to the Apple Store only to get a brand new iPad 2 that is worse than the one before it!

I am continuing to work with Apple Care to document all of these defective iPads with case numbers, I am continuing to work with the senior manager at the local Apple Store, I have taken pictures to document the defective screens, I am going to email Steve Jobs and the entire executive team, I am submitting to Mac Rumors, Apple Insider, Engadget and so on to try to expose this problem. I am disappointed that this issue has not gotten the press and exposure it deserves and I call on everyone here to SPEAK UP because I know it is a wide spread issue. Literally EVERY iPad 2 I have seen has this problem and I'm talking out of 50 or so that I just casually see day to day, EVERY SINGLE ONE has a defective screen!

Let's get this issue resolved people. Apple needs to acknowledge this and compensate those that are affected!

The pic below is my 3rd iPad 2. It is actually not that bad, which is pathetic! I have had much worse on those before it!

Maybe back light bleeding doesn't mean what you think it means?

Apple must be really angry that they cannot control everything. But it is true that from all the iPad 2s I have seen, there hasn't been any light bleed issues.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Apple must be angry they can't control everything"

If I am Apple, and you are my supplier who builds screens for me.
I as a customer state my requirements from you, and the tolerance I am willing to accept and you work to my stated tolerances.

There is nothing to be angry about in engineering. I give you my specs and requirements and you make items to my requirements. If they do not meet my requirements then I will reject them, and you will have to make them correctly for me.

Nothing rocket science or emotional about it.
