Well, as for where they might get them from, my experience today at the Apple Store may shed some light. Long story short, dropped the iPad two, dented corner of case, cracked screen, etc. They're giving me a new one for $350 (half price), and taking the old one.

Considering my current one works fine short of the big crack across the screen, they'll probably replace the case, glass and battery (so it would seem after reading here) and sell it for $649. Otherwise, why would they give me such a break on buying a new one. Apparently, Apple makes out pretty darn well here!

And going forward, heck, maybe I'll start buying refurbs!

We do, we just don't give each other refurbed gifts. I could buy a refurb for myself, but I'd never give my WIFE a refurb.

Call me old fashioned. And happily married too.

You're equating "refurbished" with "used" but that's not appropriate in this case. These are indistinguishable from new in appearance, function and warranty. It's no different than buying a second-hand diamond ring for the diamond and having it placed in a brand new setting.

Hey, if you want to buy a second hand diamond ring for YOUR wife and try to split THAT hair, be my guest. There is no way on this planet I am going down THAT road. Sleeping on the couch makes my back hurt...

I'm sorry guys, but to save $50 a refurb is just not worth it.
I understand what you are saying. Now if the refurb model was say $100 less than a new iPad, then I'd definitely go for the refurb. But then again, in this day and age, $50 is $50.

Well, it's not just a matter of money, its a matter of principle. I guess I'm too old or too old fashioned, but never in a million years would the thought of buying a refurbed anything for my wife cross my mind. Maybe women these days are more hip and savvy and appreciate the good refurbed item (I'd love for some ladies to opine), and I am sure my wife would probably not say anything because she's too kind, but I just couldn't do it. I did buy her a used car once, very nice and saved many thousands of dollars. It's not like I am a millionaire and she is a princess. But for $50?

Hey, that's just me. I already found the secret to a happy marriage, and it certainly doesn't include refurbed Xmas gifts. YMMV.

I went through this decision two weeks ago when I was looking to purchase my iPad 2 to replace my iPad. In the end, I didn't think that $50 was that much of a difference, so I went with the brand new iPad 2. However, I purchased a refurbed MBP 4-5 years ago and it was practically brand new when I got it. Had Apple offered the refurb iPad 2's $100 less than the brand new models, I probably would have pulled the trigger.

Maybe you just need a new couch? I recommend you save a few bucks by getting one second-hand.......

I guess those second hand diamonds they sell at Christie's and Sotheby's would just never do.
