I am using my Ipad 2 for about 8 months. I just realized this effect especially in search screen. I have tried to shut down ipad completelly. The burn in effect wents immediatly do not need to wait minutes.

Just for your info.

I've seen various LCD screens with burnt pixels. Specially in industrial envoriments lcds that show the same thing years in a row. Some even off you can see the marks.
But as a side note my iPad screen is way yellower than my gf iPad screen. Since its easier on my eyes I haven't returned it. So there are various panel types. 0 dead pixels no light bleed but a little mark inside of the glass.

I had this problem with my launch iPad 2 two weeks ago. Took it into the Apple Store on Regent St, London, and they swapped it out for a replacement.

I checked the replacement in store for dead pixels and, as soon as I got it back to my place of work, tested for light bleed which was none - a vast improvement over my original. I'm much happier with the replacement.

I get some of this on an ipad 2. I am not hugely worried, because I'm told it's an IPS display, and my other IPS displays seem to do the same thing at least some. It's clearly temporary and goes away if I do other stuff for a while.

Just to add my iPad to the list: I recently switched my iPad 2's home screen to a darker wallpaper and started noticing this effect, especially after using Safari for 15-20 minutes. I purchased my iPad 2 a couple weeks after launch. It could have been doing this for awhile now and I just didn't notice it on the other wallpaper.

My iPad 2 purchased in July 2011 is doing this. It is very noticeable even after only having a still image up for a few seconds.

I've been noticing this with my iPad too. I've only had it for 7 months. I noticed the burn ins before but after I turned it off it was gone. Now it seems more prominent, specially on the spot light search. I tried restarting it again since this method had worked before but it didn't help this time. Will Apple replace this?

Can someone take pic of this? Or would a screenshot work?
Just want to compare
Thanks

If you guys wish to read about it, google the term image persistence. Burn in or phosphor burn were conditions related to crt displays. With lcd displays they call it image persistence, so that term will make it easier to find information. I've seen the issue on a lot of displays. I haven't personally witnessed it on ipads.

Any screen can have permanent image retention. Plasma is the biggest offender. LCD is more robust against this but it happens all the time especially on consumer panels. Industrial panels are built to prevent this from happening. Some things you can do are:

-Switch up the screens orientation.
-Turn up the brightness and alternate solid colors on the screen.
-Keep the screen brightness down on long sessions.

My Ipad2 has the same issue. I just surf for 30 sec and go back to spotlight search, the Google search box remains in screen for at least 1-2 mins. If I reboot IPad the retention disappears.

I will give the product to repair center but do not want to get refurbished one back.

Recently I found the Burn-In Remover app in AppStore.

It works but should I continually use this? I am not using safari for hours. Even in some minutes I have the retention issue.

I have been having the burn in issue with my iPad 1. As said by a few others, it most visible when using safari or another browser. It is so bad, that after a just a few hours of web browsing, the whole top of the safari browser will be on the screen for the rest of the day. As time goes on, I am getting more pissed at this trash, as it is getting worse. I doubt I will ever buy apple again.

Same thing...

I love my iPad, and I use it all the time, even more then my MacBook Pro, but have been having this image retention issue, and IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!! I would take it in to the Genuins Bar, but the last time I took one of my iDevices in for an LCD issue, they didn't believe me. I'm afraid the store is going to put me on a "Lier" list and won't listen to me anymore. I am a very loyal Apple customer, hell, my whole family is! Altogether, just in my immediate family, we have 7 iPhones (2 are mine), 5 MacBook Pros/MacBooks, 1 iMac, 2 iPads, 13 iPods (yes, 13!), and 5 AirPort Extremes. I'm definitely not a first time customer, and because I'm the "tech genius" in the family, I take everyone's Apple products, because I know how to describe the problem.

I had burn in on left side. Also white light leak on same side.
Moreover it had a bright white spot of about 3 mm visible in white background only.
Luckily apple exchanged it for me.

But the new iPad 2 developed a small black line of about 1 cm and a dead pixel in 24 hrs.

I sold it off and got the new iPad :D

i to have this issue

its hard to see in the photo but its there.

My release-day iPad 2, which has been otherwise working perfectly, is now showing signs of screen image retention and burn in. Static items like the Safari URL bar and bright image boxes on grey backgrounds (eBay app) are causing - temporary so far - image ghosting on the display.

Anyone else see this on their iPads? Two original iPads we have aren't showing anything of the sort.

Think AppleCare would authorize a replacement? I may take it in this week to see if they will.

I am having this problem with the safari bar and other static items as well.

I have been experiencing this since shortly after receiving my iPad 2 last August 2011.

It is the safari address bar and eBay search bar mostly that appears.

It is not an intermittent problem either, it is always there, but you obviously don't notice it when using either safari or eBay apps.

It hasn't really been too bothersome to me and it does not effect the performance of my device so I haven't much cared too much about it.

I am looking forward to the new full screen feature in safari when iOS 6 is released.

My iPad 1 does this all the time with Browsers Safari and Maven when i have a lot of tabs open.
I googled it a while back and found 1 other person with the same exact issiue on the iPad 1. Had some fb's on the apple forum saying it was a hardware problem. Dude said he took it to the gb and got a replacement.

i just keep no more than 3 tabs open at a time. Everything else works fine.

Shame the iPad 2 might suffer from the same thing.

FWIW, my iPad 1 did this, too. It wasn't permanent burn-in, but went away after a while. It's more like stuck/slow pixels rather than burn-in. The solution is obviously to swap the screen, whether Apple's willing to do that of you do it yourself.

Here's the how-to guide from iFixit for the iPad 1 and iPad 2, and the LCD part for the iPad 1 and iPad 2.

I had these problems on my old iPhone 4S. I just downloaded a burn in removal app from the App Store. I just turned off the sleep and let it stay on over night. Fixed it right up.

Tried it because of a completely stuck pixel, and it helped but didn't completely fixes the problem. It rather just washes the image away and makes the temporarily a little quicker.

I get retention on my iPad 2. The address field from Safari is especially obvious when exiting Safari. However, it is only retained for about 10-20 seconds. It's normal behaviour but isn't very noticeable. You have to be on Safari for a good period of time at at least 50% brightness.

Same here, first gen iPad and sometimes after long time browsing, the safari address and search bars get stuck. A reboot always solves the issue though.
