Same issue here compared to my pad1. Plan to return in hopes of a better text experience. If no luck, seriously will consider going back to gen1 and picking up new touch for my FaceTime needs

Here's a text comparison that also includes the original iPad. It's interesting.
Yes I know I've posted this in another thread but the address is in my cache at the moment so I MUST paste it :D

My iPad 2 screen is amazing. I don't understand why so many are complaining about it. It is perfect.

I can only see the iPad 2, iPhone 4, and the iPhone 3g in the link above.

I have not really been watching movies on my iPad 2, so I never did notice the difference between the iPad 1 and iPad 2. A more technical breakdown of the iPad 2 screen is on the site linked above...

I just have not been able to find a similar breakdown of the iPad 1 screen. But I did look at my iPad 1 today and did a quick comparison... I have to agree with the OP that the saturation on the iPad 1 is at a different level, but I cannot say if the saturation produces a more "realistic" image.

I don't have any complaints with the iPad 2 screen regarding colors or contrast, but I do wish text was as crisp as my iPhone 4. I can just imagine how beautifully a retina display of this size would look.

But this screen is great, its just that every screen will pale in comparison when compared to the beautiful iPhone 4 screen.

Anandtech confirmed that the iPad 2 screen is being sourced from at least 3 different suppliers. As a result not all iPad screens will be equal. I suspect that the same may hold true for the first gen as well.

I've decided after tonight, mine must be faulty. Will report back on best buy return policy on this. I went from loving my iPad experience to using it only as needed, at least from a browser perspective. Let's hope my replacement lives up to my ipad1.

Indeed so. Samsung reportedly produced some iPad 1 screens and now CMI has also become a supplier for iPad 2 in addition to LG and Samsung. This is interesting because while these displays might be similar the aren't identical. In fact Samsung doesn't even use IPS but their own tech, (Galaxy Tab fans will tell you this tech is amazing and better than iPad's not realizing iPad 1 was already using Samsung LCDs)

The rumor has it that Apple might add even more suppliers in the future for ipads and iphones.

I agree with OP's observation, the thread title might be a bit extreme. I would say, some of the iPad 2 screens aren't as good as others.
I had a iPad 1st gen and was able to compare it to an iPad 2 (with horrible light leaks) they both had very vibrant color contrast etc. My replacement iPad 2 which has dramatically diminished backlight bleeding, unfortunately has lousy contrast and color, especially when watching videos. At first I assumed it was due to quality issues with the videos, but have now confirmed it by watching an episode of south park on Netflix. Pictures tend to look ok, but video is dull.
The overall experience is muted in comparison to my original iPad 1.
I'll most likely exchange when the light leak problem gets sorted out, hopefully the new one will be vibrant like my first ipad 2 (minus the extreme light leaks)

So, before I packed up my original iPad to be sold, I compared the screens and I am very disappointed by the result. The iPad 2 screen is not as good! I played Avatar side by side. The 2's contrast was lower, blacks were less black, bright areas were not as bright, and colors were less saturated. The movie looks amazing on the original, and just ok on the new one.

This performance was across all apps, not just the movie, but in the movie the difference was most striking. I am so disappointed. I hate to feel like I am trading down. :(

Anyone else experience this?

My first post on macrumors because I too have notices this problem in EVERY iPad 2

I have a picky eye since I work I'm film and noticed it right away, seems like a bug hopefully, went to the apple store to compare with a genius member there (noone has reported about the problem there yet, as I would assume most people won't notice, because most people deal with crappy quality) and we noticed the problem in EVERY floor model in the store. hopefully this gets reported enough to get the glitch fixed because the quality of video on the iPad 1 is head over heels better.

If you have an iPad 2 and don't think you have the problem, look closer, when you play a video it displays te video at proper gamma/levels for a split second then glades to the washed out tones, you notice it especially on 16:9 video with letterbox bars (for widescreen 2.35:1 ratio)

I returned my LG-equipped ipad 2 because of backlight bleeding but I have to admit...the screen was phenomenal. Gorgeous colors, brightness etc. And I calibrate high end monitors constantly so I know garbage when I see it. I just want a screen with minimal backlight problems is all...

Comparing side by side, there's no question in my mind that the original iPad has a better looking screen.

We have one of each, and quite honestly, I had planned to use the iPad 2 for my own use and give my wife the original, but after holding and comparing, the first iPad just looks and feels superior to me.

If I had no tablet and was looking to buy one, I'd still opt for the iPad 2 just because I prefer to have the latest device, but the first iteration of iPad is, in my opinion, of superior build and quality. That's just my opinion and I'm sure many of you disagree.

My iPad 1 has a slightly yellower screen than the iPad 2. As far as I can see there are no differences.

Life with Apple is a bit easier when one can use denial at times like this. :)

Apples the master of profiting from clever shortcuts in content. My first iPad had a much better display than the three second generation models I have now. Its as simple as that.

iPads will always be of borderline quality cause they sell for under one thousand dollars. That's the price point at which Apple begins to get better with the quality of product.
