This also has to do with the available RAM. Floor model iPad's in my mind are not good benchmarks for anything unless you kill all the running apps, do a fresh reboot...etc.

I was just playing with my iPad2 and noticed some safari issues. I opened zTools and noticed I had about 35mb of the 500mb it was reporting free. Cleared my running apps, it jumped to almost 300mb, and safari was running very nice!

Yup, despite what Apple says about what apps in the multi tasking tray do or don't do in the background in terms of taking up resources, they definitely have an impact. I keep my tray as empty as reasonable and it makes a (positive) difference.

I have no applications running other than Safari, and I get a fair bit of checker boarding. Is there a free app that will tell me how much RAM I have free? And will simply turning it off/on help, or do I have to do some sort of hard reset?

I expected better after seeing the video on browser comparisons. My new iPad 2 still refreshes more than I like, but it seems better than with my first gen. Not sure if that's because of software or new hardware though.....oh well, still very pleased with the new one.

Wish this Ipad 2 came with more RAM this checkerboarding and reloading can be a pain at times. Apple should have put 1GB RAM in these IPAD 2's instead of just 512MB.

I thought I saw reports from iOS 5 beta testers claiming that there was no longer any checkerboarding. At all. Sounded to me that pages were rendered similar to iCab and Atomic Browser.

about reloading tabs, i make a habit of closing 4-5 of the current apps in the multitasking bar to make sure i have plenty of ram left for safari.

I haven't seen any checker boarding but I have seen tabs reloading, sometimes when switching though more often when having used some other apps and coming back to Safari. I hate when it losses my place on the page :/

TBF to the iPad 2 I didn't see how it behaved under 4.3.x as when I bought it I put the iOS 5.0 beta on it straight away.

Checkerboarding and reloading all still exist on Ipad 2. I think 1GB of RAM would have solved this issue.

And this is why specs matter, boys and girls ;)

Checkerboarding is pretty annoying. Especially since I really cannot leave any page open, or loading while I am doing something else. Seems that Atomic is much better with that.

fyi, chckrboard in iOS5 has been replaced by a white background. so it's a bit like atomic browser.
