My iPad2 refurb just arrived, a day early. Ordered last Tuesday evening and arrived the next Monday.

It looks brand spanking new!!!! Great deal, only $319, ($421 with tax, shipping was free). If you are looking to save money and can live without the retina, this is the way.

Wait.... what? $102 in tax? I know NJ is insanely expensive, but I hope that's a typo - I'd move immediately... and this is coming from someone living in MD!

jersey sales tax is nothing compared to other states. what's horrendous in NJ are the property taxes.

i would easily trade horrendous property taxes for a higher sales tax. i couldn't take it anymore in NJ so i moved back to PA. for the same size townhouse my taxes are $3,700 / yr in Bucks County PA whereas they were $8,400 / yr in Morris County NJ

The way Apple leaves software improvements out for older hardware, I am extremely leery of buying previous generations of their hardware.

That said, my biggest disappointment with the latest iPad is the extremely long charging times. If I run it down with heavy use on day, there is a good chance that it will not be fully charged overnight.

I've fully charged my iPad 3 that was on 10% in one afternoon. Are you using the iPad charger or just a USB or iPhone charger? They don't charge as fast.

Yes and more. NJ sales tax is 7%. Property tax is ridiculous and seems to go up 5-6% each year despite the value of my condo going down. But, in the past year they raise the tolls on all the bridges 50% (for example $12 to cross the George Washington Bridge) with more tolls hikes planned to make it $15. NJ transit (railroad) did away with off-peak fairs which are now 50% higher. Earlier this year all the tolls road on NJ went up 50% as well. My town, Woodbridge, recently installed cameras at all the major intersections and I just got a $140 ticket for making a right turn as the light was changing.

You need to make a lot of money to be poor in NJ (and NY). I have contemplated moving out of this state due to the traffic, taxes, fees... I did live in PA long ago and that state is on my short list - as is NH whose motto on their license plates is 'live free or die'.

Anyway, I'm loving my new, I mean refurb, iPad2. It's my first iPad and so glad I got this model for a reasonable price - all my other money goes to the state.

Not to get off topic, but you should check this site to see if the red light camera at your intersection was suspended pending a certification of the yellow light timing.

And I love my refurb iPad 2 as well!

From the wall. I may be using the charger from the first gen, but I thought they were the same.

Am I wrong?

Just checked and sadly, no, mine was one of those the few that passed, besides that suspension went into effect a month after I got my ticket and I already paid. The ticket, which came in the mail, had a video link which showed me slowing down as the light was about to change but then speeding up (because I would have had to stop a bit too fast). However, I see a number of cars still crossing from the other direction indicating that several crossed at the moment and a few seconds after but I don't know if camera work in multiple directions.

Ironically, after driving almost 300,000+ miles in the past 16+ years, I have received 3 traffic tickets, and all three were giving in my town within 6 blocks of my home. I stopped giving money to local law enforcement since they take it as they need it.

I know, I'm well of topic.

I think in retrospect I'd have picked up the newer iPad 2 over the 3rd Gen. The new iPad 2 has longer battery and is so much thinner. I know it's barely noticeable to most but when I go back to my daughter's iPad 2 from my new iPad it feels so much thinner and lighter. With a Khomo case her's feels like mine with a naked back and a Smart cover. Of course a Smart cover is also thicker than the cover on a Khomo case as well.

On top of that it also feels lighter and for my main purpose of watching videos the Retina Display is not that big of a deal. Reading websites on the new iPad is a tiny bit nicer though... but I wouldn't have noticed the difference if I never owned one of the 3rd gen ones either as the iPad 2's screen suited me just fine.

Comments like this help valid my decision to go with the iPad2. About 9 months ago I debated back and forth between a Kindle reader and iPad, knowing that either way I would eventually get an iPad. Well, I went with the Kindle and no regrets. It is so light the reading experience is indeed, invisible. As a result I have read at least 3x more than normal, over 20 books in the last 8 months. But, after owning my iPad for only 24 hours I can feel the added weight and I now know it would be impossible to comfortably hold a iPad for reading for several hours a day using the Kindle app. So I can appreciate how even a little more weight, like the Ipad3, can change the experience - plus the faster charge and longer battery life makes it that much better. I don'y miss the retina since I never had it so I am not spoiled. I can say the same about my iPhone 3GS which is my first iPhone.

Hopefully. but the time I upgrade my iPad, perhaps to a refurb iPad4 in 2 years when the iPad 5 comes out, the weight will be less due to technological breakthroughs.

As much as video and pictures look pretty amazing on the iPad 2, text looks pretty horrible. Oh well, I got it for $50 off $419 + tax at Staples. (day 1 today haha)

If The Ipad 3 had not been a job thing... I would have keept The Ipad 2 - for The better battery time alone.... Now The wife enjoys it...

The new iPad is not "so much thinner" and heavier than the iPad 2. The difference is barely noticeable at all. Reading websites is a LOT better due to the new display, but if you can live with the 2 year old screen of an iPad 2, you go ahead. iOS 6 will make you very disappointed when you are skipped over for great new features. Just saying.

I have both and iPad 2 and the new iPad... it is both thicker and heavier... With a back cover and smart cover attached it feels as "large" as my first gen iPad. Is it in any way a bad machine? No. But when I go back to (now my daughter's) iPad 2 with a case and cover the difference is definitely noticeable.

If someone were to ask me... if I HAVE to buy one now and that 100 dollar difference between the iPad 2 and 3 16gb wifi model is a big deal. I would say get the iPad 2. As I previously wrote, the screen is fine on the iPad 2... people like my wife and my daughter can't even tell the difference when they're side by side, without me pointing out the differences and the extra battery life is probably more appreciated, to the general consumer.

I on the other hand really dig the LTE data access. I don't activate it every month but when I do have it it's a joy to use... something I didn't have on my previous iPads.
