unfortunately this seems to just generally be a problem with these panels. If you do the exchange game you may be able to get one where the effect is less noticeable, but it may have other issues. On the other hand, I at least find this to be one of the most noticeable problems as it catches my attention even passively; I don't really have to be looking for defects.

Yeah, it sucks. And I wholeheartedly agree that this issue is the most annoying. For me at least, I NEVER see the light bleeding, but this I see all the time. I suppose I could learn to ignore it, it doesn't influence the usefulness of the device, but one really shouldn't have to live with such imperfections. But I guess I have to; I simply don't have neither the patience nor the time to participate in the exchange lottery.

I am surprised that so few have commented here? Do you guys not have this issue or don't you care about it?

I've seen a lot of iPad 2's in my work, but I have't seen any with that type of color distortion. I don't think it's common.

Sometimes new iPads will have a bit of yellowing here or there, but normally that fades away as the screen adhesives cures over the course of a couple weeks.

One other commenter said that white iPad bezels get discolored. I haven't seen that happen. The white part is under glass, so it can't "get dirty" or absorb oils. Maybe if it was left in direct sun for weeks/months? Anyway, I don't think the bezel is an issue.

The most common complaint is about backlight bleeding when viewing mostly black screens in a dark room (sometimes with brightness turned to maximum). I think a lot of iPad2's have that issue. It's not detectable under most conditions though.

If your iPad is more than 3 weeks old, and you still have a screen discoloration, call Apple and see if you can get a warranty exchange. I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to Apple stores - the closest one is an airplane ride away. Fortunately, Apple can handle service via mail in most regions.

Yeah, the bleeding is definitely present on MANY units. According to interwebs, this issue is also very common, though. He says he has seen it on almost all iPads he has looked at.
I don't know if people don't notice it as much as the bleeding perhaps, it IS somewhat subtle, but once noticed you see it all the time.

Thanks for the tip on sending it to Apple, I might consider that. Since that is what the store where I bought it would do anyway, I might as well circumvent them.

Interestingly, my issue is EXACTLY the same as described here for the Galaxy S II in a HUGE thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079444

EDIT: Also, it seems that a kernel update to the Samsung actually fixed/made the problem much less noticeable. That sounds preeety weird, but nevertheless, I doubt Apple will do anything about it.

So MMO, earlier in the thread I had said I was just going to keep my second ipad2, as I would just deal with the color uniformity. However, had problems with wifi, so they switched it out. The third was worse then the second, so I had it replaced. I'm on the fourth now, and its the same as my first.

So in conclusion, they are all like that to different degrees. Nothing will change by playing the exchange game, only waste of time.

Thanks for that comment, I guess that means it really is pretty futile. But some in this thread have said that they don't have it, though. I wonder if they are simply not noticing it. Because it is QUITE subtle, but IMO easy to see most of the time once it has been noticed.
Still, it seems to be at least somewhat a general problem - also judging from that thread I posted on the Galaxy.

I'm not so sure it's a tint issue as it is a viewing angle issue.

I see what's appears to be a color shift, but when I move my head a little more to one side it dissipates.

I also don't see the shift at all when completely flipped.

My iPad has almost nonexistent light bleed so I'm sticking with this one.

Personally I think it's the current LCD diffuser technology, it just can't make the screen perfectly uniform at all angles.

I bought my iPad right after July 4th and it seems to be perfect. I can't notice any uniformity issues at all

I can't help it, but I keep noticing this issue. I might end up trying to get a new unit after all, though it's pretty discouraging what hashsi99 reports.

Hi. I revisited this issue to see if I really wanted to bother trying a return again. Long story short, it seems to be there in all of them, even the dimmer ones. This isn't surprising, though - I also notice it in a lot of other displays, especially in lower priced IPS units. Backlight brightness and color temperature do vary significantly between iPads, and what might be described as falloff (e.g. lack of uniformity in brightness) does to a lesser degree. These can affect the perception of shift. From what I can tell, a lot of people don't readily notice it.

Oh well.

Hm, yeah, I also think it's pretty common. However, I haven't been able to see it as clearly as on my own on the few units in stores that I've looked at.
Then again, maybe it takes a little while of usage for one to notice it on a particular unit.
You do a pretty good job convincing me not to bother with exchanging though.:)

I do think that it takes time to notice because variations in backlighting affect perception of it.

Honestly, though, if you are finding yours worse than average and feel the need to exchange it, maybe that's the right course of action. Whatever the result, sometimes there are things in life where we cannot mentally have closure without taking action. Maybe this is one of those times; I don't know. If you do exchange it, I wish you luck in getting a better one!

Yeah, maybe I will.
By the way any of you guys know if one can get an exchange at an Apple store in another country if it has not been bought at an Apple store?
Because the thing is, I live in Denmark and have bought my iPad at a local store since there are no Apple stores here. But I am going to Las Vegas in the coming week so do you think I might actually get it replaced at an Apple store there?

We have two ipad 2's in this household both have the bright white display with good colours one exhibits the slight fall off in brightness along the lefthand edge in portrait mode but has minimal backlight bleed. The other has more significant backlight bleed but no non linearity in whiteness.

Yeah, maybe I will.

No idea. Guess it's worth a shot. I strongly suggest spending some time looking at the display models first and comparing before you exchange, though.

A reason that people are not aware of this might actually be that they normally do not have the brightness as low as I do. If the brightness is turned up, it definitely becomes less noticeable...

I am not going to do anything about it, though, that's my final decision.:D
The device is working fine and the exchange roulette is ... not really an option for me.

I have this on my iPad also, it's a little more yellow on the bottom (portrait) then the top, all the iPads I have had showed this a little though

Does anyone else have this issue?

I have been through 5 replacements (for different issues) but I decided to keep #3, now I notice this, anyone have luck getting one without this problem? I don't want to replace for these stupid issues anymore

I think also that some people are far more sensitive to these sorts of things. I became aware of unevenness on my iPad screen after using it for two weeks. However, none of my friends could see it at all!! They thought I was mad.

To be honest, I struggle to see it now even when looking for it. It's the same with my iPhone. I used to think that the unevenness of the screen was incredibly pronounced. Now I look at it and laugh at myself for being so daft.

I'm not saying for a second that we imagine these things. Only that perception is a funny thing and that flaws can become massively magnified when they become the focus of attention.

I took a picture of mine:

Not exchanging anymore though
