But all of these moves are leading up to the iPhone 5 -- a completely redesigned handset -- which our sources say is on track for a summer launch. Right now, the device is being tested discreetly by senior staff at Apple (strictly on campus only). We don't have much info on the phone at this point, but our understanding is that the new device will be a total rethink from a design standpoint and will be running atop Apple's new A5 CPU (a Cortex A9-based, multi-core chip). This device, like the iPad 2, will feature a Qualcomm chipset that does triple duty as the CDMA / GSM / UMTS baseband processor -- from what we hear there's no LTE in the mix at this point.

The bit in bold is pretty interesting...

Sounds like the next iPhone will actually be a a significant upgrade rather than a 3gs type upgrade.

Thoughts?

If Gizmodo were to report this rumor, I'd believe it 100%.

I don't doubt Apple has something new up it's sleeve since there are increasing competition from android and w7p. Dual core or not, who gives a crap when none of the software uses it. What a waste if it's in there just for being dual core.

I've learned from my PC days to chill off on specs. What's more important to me these days are devices that let me do what I want and quickly without much effort. I don't want to tinker with battery, tinker with video quality, etc. Just give me what I need it'll be great.

You can tweak every bit of performance from your smart phone but if that makes you happy then great - for me I don't have time to waste on nonsense. that's why Apple iPhone 4 is the winner.

All I want in the next generation phone is for a bit larger screen - it would be sweet even for a 3.7" because it makes a subtle difference. Even 4.0" would be sweet. Anything bigger is too big.

Keep the home screen the same layout is perfectly fine actually. It works fab and no need for those changes. Do change the stupid notification system - the pop up dialog boxes are really not intuitive for messaging. That area really does need to be improved. (bitesms can help but that's JB). And for the lock screen, complete info (such as personalized weather, news clips, calendar, etc) - because it's a waste of space for just a slide to unlock feature and the clock is there to waste space.

I could care less for dual core - as long as it's just as smooth as the iPhone 4, I have no complaints. Oh, last but not least the major thing I wish for the iPhone 5 to do is render web pages as fast as my desktop. The performance even on the iPad 1 isn't as fast as I'd like - if they can make the browser load and render web pages like my desktop, that will be the cream :p

complete redesign of iphone? Hard to believe...they said they spent a year and a half redesigning for the iphone 4...it would be cheaper to skip the redesign this year I would assume.

As far as it being dual GSM/CDMA...it's possible and believable except for the fact that we saw they will come out with 2 iphones 4,1 and 4,2. Makes sense one is GSM the other CDMA. That casts doubt on the whole "complete redesign" claim.

Hopefully it takes care of the antennae issue.

I don't know about you but I've forgotten about it - nor have I always ever held the phone in which I bridge the lower part causing a loss of signal.

But I too would like to see a FLAWLESS exterior design. The iPhone 4 is the most beautiful smartphone handset ever built. There's NOTHING on the market that looks as sexy both in material and design.

This. ^

Of course, this can vary on opinion, but I mean nothing, absolutely nothing compares. ;)

Hope it's true; sounds like an excellent upgrade from my 3GS.

You know the truth is I upgrade every handset every year (since apple iPhone 3g). the resale value on these apple devices will help recoupe a small loss and sometimes I even gained (from selling the iPhone 3GS). I will have ZERO doubt when it comes time to sell my iPhone 4, it will bring me a hefty sum enough to help cover for the iPhone 5. That's why you buy Apple products - they are highly regarded as being high quality expensive products in which the products will have high resale value.

You don't buy a BMW and expect it to resale like a Honda.

Personally I feel, it's as dumb as the red nub stick on thinkpads. Lenovo still have not changed that lineup's design at all for how many years now?
I think the track-balls on the Nexus and BlackBerries are far worse. It's old-tech, and it's a touchscreen for crying out loud! We don't need any tracking system. Our fingers work perfectly fine without it.

<putting on flame retardant suit> Quite frankly, I liked the old rounded edge design better. While the squared off edges are ok, changing the volume from a rocker switch to buttons was a mistake IMHO. It went from super intuitive 'can do it by touch only,' to 'now I gotta look at it to be sure my finger is on the right button' ~ a step backwards.

I would welcome a redesign. They HAVE to fix the antennae issue. It's been the biggest negative of the 4, by far.

Totally agree. What's more, it's got a great "feel" to it.

That being said, having shattered both front and back glass after an unprotected drop, I can tell you a damaged iPhone 4 is about the saddest thing I've ever seen. :(

To each his own.

Btw, you won't (shouldn't) get flamed - you're open to share your own thoughts and opinions. After all, this is a forum.

LiquidMetal and Gorilla Glass?

When they say completely redesigned, they mean new SoC, radio and radio provider (qualcomm). The aesthetics will only change as the antenna band has to accommodate CDMA and GSM frequencies.

sooooooooo this means Verizon will dick over the buyers that purchased in February and come out with a new one 4 months later? Great!!! Or this is still just part of the att yearly release?

Hopefully they do something. If not, I doubt my next phone will be an iPhone. I personally don't like the design of the ip4, it's not horrible, but it's not great. It's no where near as comfortable to hold as the 3GS was. I've gotton used to it now, but everytime I pick up my girls 3GS, I remember what I'm missing. I now know how much I will use a device like this, and I know now that I would like a bigget screen, something I know that probably wont do. I also feel ui is also way behind the time. Htc sense blows it out of the water in my opinion. Maybe it's to complicated for others, but I like it a lot.

IMO ... this will just be an upgrade ... not a total re-design.

It makes no sense for Apple to bring on a new carrier like Verizon and then change the design mere months after gaining millions of new iPhone buyers.

Engadget is just trying to start things to drive traffic to their website ... They have no credible information about a re-design.

THIS.

Sounds to me like they have a good source from Qualcomm and a bit of imagination about Apple's plans.

They should be used to this with all the android phones released every 2 months(it feels like)

The "redesign" is probably just a revised antenna system (to accommodate the dual-mode CDMA/GSM) as we saw in those leaked images (four symmetrical break points and a SIM card slot) along with the full internal overhaul for the new system. I can't imagine Apple doing away with the gorgeous IP4 design so quickly. I would be shocked to see an exterior redesign before the IP6.
