iPad 2 with High Resolution Screen and SD Card Slot, iPhone 5 with A5 Processor?

Engadget claims to have some details about the upcoming iPad 2, iPhone 5 and next generation Apple TV.

The iPad 2 details are close to what has been reported. This includes a "super high resolution" screen that is akin to the iPhone 4's Retina Display. The physical screen size is said to remain the same but will feature both front and rear cameras. One somewhat new piece of information they do provide is that they claim that the new iPad will carry an SD card slot. There had been talk and speculation about an SD card slot based on some of the earlier circulating case designs, but no real definitive statements.

Meanwhile, Engadget also claims that Apple will start transitioning their communication chipsets to those produced by Qualcomm. The move will allow for Apple to support dual-modes allowing for both Verizon and AT&T compatibility in the same hardware model. This chipset change will also advance to the iPhone 5, again allowing a single hardware model to work across both Verizon and AT&T. Right now, Apple is producing two distinct iPhone 4s to support both CDMA (Verizon) and GSM (AT&T) modes.

The iPhone 5 is said to be "completely redesigned" with an expected launch in the summer. One major upgrade will be a Cortex A9-based multicore processor (to be dubbed the Apple A5). The current Apple A4 processor is a single-core Cortex A8 processor. This faster processor will also make its way into the next generation Apple TV.

They should be used to this with all the android phones released every 2 months(it feels like)

yeah, but thats a little different, I would expect apple to have a new phone once a year as they have been doing since the release, so since the verizon iphone was released in February, the next update to the hardware "should" not be till next February

I really think the June release will still be just ATT, The media and customers will BLOW UP at them if they release a new phone 4 months after they announce it on their network

Completely redesigned?! My iPhone 4 is going to feel old faster than I thought.

That's what I thought immediately. However, I don't mind. It is still a great phone.

I'm excited to see all the iOS devices make a huge leap forward in 2011. Multicore is going to be great! My next phone will be faster than my desktop. Although, my current one probably matches it. :p

I doubt redesign

Is it just me or does the iPad dummy model look like it's inflated with air?

I agree, I don't think that Steve has forgotten what happened when they changed just the capacity and price of the original iPhone and the **** storm that caused.

An SD slot makes a lot more sense to me than a USB port. It’s a cable-free way to use your camera, which is itself a mobile device. Whereas most USB devices—with their associated cables—aren’t really things you lug around everywhere. (And Bluetooth alternatives to USB devices—keyboards especially—are common.)

Maybe the USB rumors started because some prototypes have tested a USB port instead of SD, in the same location?

I don’t really need either one (and there’s a kit available for both) but of the two I’d take SD! Or, no harm in having both...

I’m still skeptical of seeing a resolution increase, but it would be great if they can pull it off! I at least expect a low-end iPad model to keep the old 1024x768 for minimal cost (and best usage of limited display manufacturing capacity).

EDIT: re design, it’s exactly what I’d expect, and I like it. It follows the shape of the new Touch (allowing it be a little thinner—and feel even more thin). And those leaked cases make it likely too.

It all sounds good, if true. I can't imagine how Apple could lift the bar by more then a notch, but they do have the ability to surprise as they have often done.

This time I have a dog in the fight. Looking forward to an iPhone through Verizon and before that, an iPad 2. WooT! It's all good!

One thing surprised me, Ballmer was to blather out the close of CES and not one drop if ink was spilled on what he might have said. If Jobs had farted the media would have announced something.

I have been posting for 8 months that the iPad 2 will get 4x the pixels. It's not as if it was a vector based GUI. Besides, what apps cannot scale up due to battery issues can be run in 1024 x 768 mode.

Redesign could refer to the internals.

It would be great.

The iPhone got a serious redesign from 3GS to 4, let's see what can be changed.

I cant imagine Apple abandoning their Tic-Tic update pattern for the iPhone. A speed bump is all i would expect from the '5'

sooooooooo this means Verizon will dick over the buyers that purchased in February and come out with a new one 4 months later? Great!!! Or this is still just part of the att yearly release?

You mean consumers don't do their homework and take the sales peoples word at face value?!?!?! HOLLY ****! Why didn't I ever think of doing that myself!

Maybe it just me, but I don't really see the advantage to dual core cpus in phones. I currently have a Droid 2 rooted and it comes with a qualcomm(gpu is close to the one in the iphone 4) and I never thought to myself; uh wow I wish my phone(cpu wise) was faster. Sure, a better gpu might have some benefits specially when media watching and games; but that about it. I have used my buddies iPhone 4 and even still the cpu wasn't what was holding it back, nor was the gpu. What is holding many of us back is our data speeds. Why can't Apple just make the iPhone 5 4G(LTE 4G) compatible to really stop the culprit that is holding many of us back imho. I would even be content with HSPDA+ 4G.

I will admit though the specs of dual core devices like the LG 2X and Bionic with their Tegra 2 look very tempting, but still not sure what advantage dual core will have right now on phones.

Hmm, increased screen resolution, 2 cameras and an SD card slot, which in their own right are decent upgrades but are more "ameniti" type of upgrades, I'd rather have a key component upgraded like RAM for starters..
