I've had identical, if not better, battery life on the new iPad compared to what I was getting on iPad 2. I use it on the train and at work every day for a total of probably a couple of hours of usage. When I get home at night I play games on it, read stories to my kids, watch video, surf, etc. I'm currently 4 days into my last charge and I'm at 45%. 50% brightness. Haven't done as much gaming as I usually do, so that percentage is a little above average, but still--45% after 4 days of regular usage.

That's just one specific user's experience, so I'm not saying you're not having a problem. Just saying that what you're experiencing is probably not the norm. I will also say that I have only noticed my iPad getting slightly warmer one time, and it was not uncomfortably warmer--just slightly warmer.

Flew from USA to Tokyo, about 11 hours, used the entire time above 10k feet, reading, some videos. No seat plug on the flight. Had 47% when I landed.

That doesn't seem possible. Maybe your percentage was not accurate?

Yes, the battery life is frickin insane. I've used it a ton and never have gone below 80% battery life. And I've used it for 4 hours at a time.

So yep, it's insane. INSANE. :D

So my iPad 3 was at 95% charge this morning. I played 'Wheres my water?' for 2 hours and its down to 65%! The brightness was on medium. I cannot get my head around this. From my experience Im looking at 6-7hr battery per day, OK that's about enough but my iPad 2 (let's face it, a totally different machine) gave me ~10hrs for the same usage patterns.

So now im going to keep the iPad 3 screen even dimmer and use airplane mode when i dont need the signal. The fact it takes forever to charge doesnt help.

I really hope Apple improve the power management (seriously down clocking the CPU/GPU etc) with the next iOS update.

The retina is nice but we seem to be paying a hell of a price on the battery life. I was not expecting that.
iPad 2 is superior to the iPad 3 overall. Apple has gone backwards. The technology hasn't caught up to support retina screen on iPad. Apple should have just kept the 1024 x 768 or bump it to 1280 x 1024 and concentrate on better build quality and QC..... but of course, that means they have to drop contract with Foxconn (China). Apple knew that's is completely out of the question so instead they just jacked up the res. Nice going chief.

If I was the Apple president the first thing I would do is:

Step 1). Lay off 70% of Apple employees worldwide.

Step 2). Break contract with Foxconn chinese gay company.

Step 3). Break contract with LG and Samsung gay companies.

Step 4). Restructure the R&D here in the states. Sign a contract with Sony or other reputable Japanese manufacturers for production. Have plants built there.

It will cost the consumers 4 times as much for purchasing an iPad. But at the end, you will actually have "properly built" product. Screen issues will be almost non-existent.

Step 5). Once the production settles and profit has been generated, I can then hire some more employees...

This is how I would do.

Yes, they should do all these things, especially since they are expected to sell 66 million iPads this year with the current strategy. ONE PERSON gives anecdotal evidence that they're not getting the correct battery life and now Apple should abandon their whole business model?

I'm getting the same battery life as I did on the iPad 2 (true story). Should Apple adopt their old strategy back again?

Same here: I charged my iPad to full Saturday afternoon after completing the firmware restore I described earlier, have not plugged it back in since, and it just finally died about 20 minutes ago. During those 72 hours I got approximately 9 hours of use, the bulk of which is reading, writing, email, and business presentations. The remainder of the time it ran in standby exhibiting virtually no battery drian. It is LTE, has wifi always enabled along with bluetooth though which i run my keyboard. I have push notifications enabled as well as location services and all that other stuff people keep telling me I have to disable to get proper battery life, and the screen brightness runs at or about the 50% mark at all times

Bottom line, once I identified and resolved the software corruption brought onto my device via restore from my previous iPad, the new iPad is working flawlessly. I haven't had to dumb down the settings or use it any differently that I've used my previous model for almost 2 years, I just needed clean uncorrupted software.

I'm selling Apple shares because they haven't appointed you CEO yet. Brilliant strategy and nice trollin'

That's a lot of gay bashing. I think the lady doth protest TOO much.

Glad you don't work for Apple and hope you don't work in a business I am a consumer of or work in...

that has got to be the most inanely funny thing I ve read here in a while, hahahahahaha.:D

I'm routinely getting 10.5-11 hours screen-on use per day with my brightness set to 70% and WiFi only. I get slightly more when disabling WiFi as that burns power even when not being used. Location services disabled as I use my iPhone for navigation. Bluetooth also disabled. Average daily use is 6 hours of Note taking and sketches, 2+ hours Keynote presentations using VGA out, plus maybe 1-2 hours of video use. IBooks seldom used, maybe a few rounds of Words with Friends thrown in there also. Charge is via standard ipad charger overnight.

This exceeds my expectations for the iPad 3.

I'm glad you shared this because I'm just getting into being able to use my iPad effectively and the positive feedback is very heartening. Woot iPad.

iPad 2 battery is far superior than the new iPad.

So disappointed in Apple for trying to pull a fast one on us consumers.

iPad drain while sleeping in airplane mode

I had my iPad in airplane mode and while it was sleeping, it drained over 9% in 10 hrs. Doesn't sound right. What could be causing the drain with the network turned off? Weird...

From my usage over the past few weeks I noticed that display brightness was the biggest factor in battery life. If I have the brightness all the way turned up the batter drain was pretty drastic (I would drop a percent every couple minutes) but if I leave the brightness around the halfway mark battery life is normal.

I just charged mine last night..all I've done so far is play maybe 7 or 8 rounds of Draw Something. It's already down to 94%. I probably haven't even spent 20 min using it for it to decrease so quickly. (this is just one of many instances)

Should I do a restore like others have suggested? I'm definitely not getting the mega battery life that some others are talking about. And if it doesn't improve, what are my options? I ordered my iPad the day it was released for pre-order so I have no idea if/when I can exchange out

I should add I've kept my brightness @ 50% since I got it and have turned off cellular data etc to cut down on drainage.

I was also thinking my ipad 3 battery life doesn't seem as stellar as the ipad 1 i used to own. After a quick test it turns out the battery continues to drain at a rate of about 1-2%/hr even while it's locked and completely idle, which would add up to about 10-15% over night like someone mentioned. This is with wifi and LTE turned on. I configured mine as a new device and didn't restore from icloud.

Hopefully this is a software issue.

I've been pretty happy with the battery life so far. Seems to be about the same as my dad's iPad 2, and the screen makes it so much better.

I've been using mine for 2 hours now, and I'm at 96%

as much as the iphone's antennae was a software issue I think, they changed the algorithm to make it appear as it had more signal than it did with a software update...maybe they can tweak the algorithm here too to make it appear it doesn't drain when idle and go more rapidly down when in use... I would take the ipad back if I were you btw, tell them, I can't have it sitting there for a couple of hours and losing 2% when idle, it's not acceptable, nor is 10-15% % a night acceptable because this means, less than 8 days idle life which is far less than they advertise.

...I think the trap we might be falling into is using the iPad 3 like we used the iPad 2 and not taking into account how much power the retina and the A5x can draw. We're going to have to make an extra effort to manage power, such as make sure the brightness is kept low and possibly shut down apps we're not using.

The trap that "we" are falling into? "We" didn't start this thread. I don't necessarily disagree with your overall point, but no need to put words in others' mouths

My experiencing having used both iPad 2 and the new 3rd Gen is overall battery life for the things I do is about the same. I did encounter one program that has not been updated for several months called Nightstand that is not optimized and will cause Rapid battery drain. So I do know some poorly written programs can impact battery life. Once I quit using Nightstand I have had ZERO battery issues. I am absolutely pleased with it.
