I hope the retina display and better camera happens because I been waiting for this in the iPad 3 to become my first iPad. If it wasn't for the non retina display I would've gotten the iPad 2. Given the pricing I can't upgrade every year. So I was waiting.

Basically, my thinking went like this:

iPad 1: wasn't sure of I have a use for it didn't buy.

iPad 2: after seeing the success and functionality of iPad 1 I wanted iPad 2. But once I demoed it at the Fifth Avenue store I was disappointed after comparing it to iPhone 4 display and the camera. So I decided to hold out for possible retina display iPad 3.

Currently, I own my 2nd iPhone. A iPhone 4S upgraded from my iPhone 3GS and saving money for the iPad 3 and my first iMac the 27" high end.

Watch out, wanting a retina display on an iPad 3 in this thread will NOT BE TOLERATED!

Most idiotic thing i have heard today. Basically sounds like you have to choose from awesome device like iPad 2 and crappy device like Kindle Fire and you are saying if Apple doesn't make A. B. C. and make uber awesome device you will settle for crappy device over already awersome device.

Idiotic.

On a related note:

Cash ready for iPad 3.

Where did the person say that their choice was an iPad 3 with a large increase in resolution or buying something not as good as the iPad 2. The choice may be like mine: do I replace my iPad 2 with an iPad 3 or do I need to wait until the iPad 4 to have enough difference to make it worth the money using MY requirements, not YOURS or SOMEONE ELSE'S.

Some people have the money or the need to always have the newest model. Other people have a set of requirements that must be met before they update. Many times these things are never met & thus they never get around to updating. Most of us are somewhere in the middle.

Some us these choices are between one model or another one, all being Apple products.

Retina display = instant sale

if not, Kindle Fire.

So Kindle Fire> screen 1024 x 600 res.

iPad 2 >screen 1024x768 res.

So you say that if the iPad3 DOES'NT have "Retina" display.. you would settle for the lowest common denominator?

Anybody else work this out for me:confused::confused::confused:

(Or could it just be..."I've gota have the latest buzz word...who cares what it means?)

Hmmn. I give up.

I’ll be amazed it it’s got a retina display. (Or any res increase at all; since 2x retina is what makes the most sense, once it’s practical to make.)

A retina display needs a brighter backlight, faster GPU, and much more RAM. All that equals much more battery drain, and thus more weight and thickness too. And the display is harder to make in quantity, evidently, which could harm sales. A new feature that makes a worse device (albeit with awesome display sharpness) AND reduces sales/profits? Sounds unlikely. For now.

It WILL become practical in time, and I’ll love it, but if can happen even as soon as 2012 I’ll be truly impressed.

Now, iPad 3 screens may still be brighter, or have some other difference, which still calls for manufacturing a different part from the iPad 2. And the iPad 3 could have plenty of other upgrades without a retina display.

I am shocked even amazed at this news. An iPad3 in March or April, now who could have predicted that. Having said that, I held on to my trust old iPad1 and waited for this as this will be worth the upgrade while the iPad2 certainly wasnt. How many more of these daft front page stories will there be between now and March, dozens I presume

Invisible Speakers are the key!

sure - interest in screen quality is understandable... but let's remember this is largely a media consumption device,

and a good part of good media is audio.

apple stinks at audio.

why? i don't know.

they seemingly only have to throw a few more nickles (almost literally) at the speakers in order to improve quality ten fold. And if they located speakers where it made sense - front of device - quality would ramp up to 100 fold improvement.

please do apple.
although less sexy, there's more to a device that the screen.

thumb up this post to let apple know this is important to you.

As an Audio Engineer I completely agree with you better sound would be great. Unfortunately to make it sound dynamic and clear enough that you would want to use a built-in speaker over headphones, they would have to change the form-factor quite a bit.

UNLESS they did this.

http://mashable.com/2009/09/22/invisible-speakers/

This article came out a while ago, but demonstrates a thin film over the screen that vibrates and produces full dynamic sound. Awesome.

This article even mentions that a 'rumored Apple tablet' may utilize this tech in the future. Well, Apple hasn't yet, but I don't see why they can't.

Could be another selling point for Apple, along with the fact that this tech hasn't really been done anywhere yet, which fits well with their 'bringing fantasies to life" motif.

Here's hoping!

So Kindle Fire> screen 1024 x 600 res.

iPad 2 >screen 1024x768 res.

The screen res between kindle and ipad are kind of a wash for me, but the retina display?

2048x1536 packed into a ten inch display would be GORGEOUS for photos and games.

So you say that if the iPad3 DOES'NT have "Retina" display.. you would settle for the lowest common denominator?

Exactly.

Anybody else work this out for me:confused::confused::confused:

Yeah: don't worry about what other people buy so much. Just enjoy what you have! :)

(Or could it just be..."I've gota have the latest buzz word...who cares what it means?)

Hmmn. I give up.

Or it could be that retina display devices (high dpi) look downright amazing and make reading text and viewing hi-res photos a joy. THe iPhone 4 started it.

Blame apple. ;)

I don't. I merely pointed out that the original premise that a Kindle Fire was the only alternative to a "retina!" display seemed rather odd.

Kind of smacks of the usual welter of posts saying something along the lines of...
"If Apple don't give me what i need (sic) then I'm going over to Windows!"

Pointless, and makes very little sense that I can see.

Would you REALLY rather have an iPad 3 even though it had the current ipad screen resolution, or a Kindle Fire?

For me: Retina (or at least higher res) display=instant sale,
If not, hang on to my iPad 1 and hold out for iPad 4.
My iPhone 4 screen has completely spoiled me.

I dunno... I have an iPad and an IPhone 4 and while the iPhone's screen is lovely, I think its biggest positive is in it's ability to display small type, etc. The iPad, being bigger... doesn't need to make the type so tiny. Which isn't to say that higher resolution isn't better, just that I don't look at my iPad next to my iPhone and go 'ewwwwwww'. They are both rather nice displays.

The inability of folks on this forum to understand that a person might only be willing to splurge on the cost of an iPad 3 vs. a much less expensive Kindle Fire based on the quality of the display is amusing. Everyone has their own budget and their own requirements. Why is it so hard to understand that someone would want a retina display before they jump up to a higher priced model?

Looks great!

That said, do these annoucements of January 2012 assembly have to come right around the holidays when we're buying iPad 2 as gifts? :)

Come on. People who read this site should not be buying iPad 2s as gifts. Get that person a gift card for iPad 3. You know the iPad 2 is old and it wasn't much of a spec jump from iPad 1. Sophisticated folks like us should be holding out for iPad 3.

Since I mainly use the pad for reading (newspapers and email), an increase of the display sharpness is the most important improvement Apple can make. All the other stuff like speed and weight will just be gravy. Siri might be nice as well, but I haven't tried it yet on a 4S so I don't know how much it would be used in real life.

So the iPad has to use cutting edge technology, that today doesn't exist, or your going to buy a cheap product that isn't even in the same product category?

Tis like saying If the next Lamborghini has hovercraft abilities = instant buy

If not, Ford fiesta.

Maybe he just feel that retina would be the killer feature that made it worth the money and if it doesn't have it he will get a cheaper, perfectly adequate product and save som money? What's so odd about that?

Most idiotic thing i have heard today. Basically sounds like you have to choose from awesome device like iPad 2 and crappy device like Kindle Fire and you are saying if Apple doesn't make A. B. C. and make uber awesome device you will settle for crappy device over already awersome device.

Cash ready for iPad 3.

So typical of people on this site to dismiss a non-Apple product as crappy when they haven't even seen it in real life.

Would you REALLY rather have an iPad 3 even though it had the current ipad screen resolution, or a Kindle Fire?

Of course almost everyone would rather have the iPad 3 (but some like the more portable form factor of the Fire). But the comparison should be iPad 3 to Kindle Fire + $300. Some people like $300. It has some nice features as well.

I don't know exactly which specs are improved from the iPad 2, but my iPad is an important enough tool in my life that I plan to buy an iPad 3. Whatever is improved, I'm confident it will be well worth the money.

That said, I would be most pleased with a 2048x1536 display. I expect to see a faster A6 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and higher resolution cameras. I expect the iPad 3 to support Siri. We'll see.

what's the point of an A6? Quad core?? LOL!! A5 is fast enough, on top of the fact, that developers haven't even caught up to using dual core of the A5 still.

Upgrade will be more steered towards, the new display, new camera (since 4S already has it), and perhaps more ram and storage.

I meant blame Apple for making me love retina displays. ;)

I merely pointed out that the original premise that a Kindle Fire was the only alternative to a "retina!" display seemed rather odd.

OK. I never took offense to your posts. :)

Kind of smacks of the usual welter of posts saying something along the lines of...
"If Apple don't give me what i need (sic) then I'm going over to Windows!"

People do that all the time, even in reverse (from windows to mac). It's perfectly reasonable.

Would you REALLY rather have an iPad 3 even though it had the current ipad screen resolution, or a Kindle Fire?

I believe I have stated multiple times that I would, but would prefer an ipad. :)

Will Ipad 3 Match Kindle Fire or Samsung Tab

I doubt it very much.

No GPS chip in non 3g version.
No way to connect Bluetooth device. Unless they're Apple of course.
No way to connect to other manufacturer mobile devices to exchange photos music etc.

Not much different from all the other Apple hardware.

It will be a Samsung Tab for me. Then I will be sure I can connect bluetooth GPS/Mobiles/Laptops etc etc. that I already own.

Or it could be, great increase in display is worth the extra money, if not the fire at a much lower cost will be fine.

That said, I will most likely purchase an iPad 3, after playing with the fire it just isn't big enough for me.

If Hawaii gets a lava theme park ride = instant vacation

We could keep an entire thread going with these comparisons. :)

If indeed the next iPad has a much higher resolution screen, the A6 will be necessary (probably more for the GPU than the CPU). I can't imagine the A5 being able to display that resolution and simultaneously mirroring it on an HDTV.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

My guess:

1. Siri comes to iPad. This will be the main theme

2. Use ipad every where. Support of lte, with super-duper data plans etc

3. Improved hardware. Don't know about quad-core, but more powerfull duo graphic system with more ram 100%. Maybe camera.. Rear for sure.

4. Improved battery. Or weight

That all.
These changes are huge.

Actually they improved ipad2 a lot - slite different shape, hardware, weight. This update is more S stile update. I want be surprise if it will be iPad2s. And first everyone will blame apple, then everyone will buy it)))

Simpler, better existing solution: Airplay

I can use the best speakers I can afford, in any physical arrangement I want for better stereo separation.

As an Audio Engineer I completely agree with you better sound would be great. Unfortunately to make it sound dynamic and clear enough that you would want to use a built-in speaker over headphones, they would have to change the form-factor quite a bit.
