To answer the question, they don't sell the 3 anymore because then it wouldn't give much of an incentive to go with the 4 over the 3. And yes I realize the 4 has a pretty dramatic spec bump, but most consumers don't care about that.

Not even factual. The 3rd generation iPad is known as the iPad 3. It's just not the official title.

Actually, in fact there is no device called the iPad 3. It's just a fact, don't let it hurt your feelings - it's not personal.

----------

Don't care. I'm calling it ipad 3 especially since calling it the new ipad will only confuse most people.

Call it what you want, just understand your wrong. Nothing personal. I just prefer facts to fiction.

----------

Yes you are being pedantic

I disagree. Have a nice day.

by definition youre being pedantic.
shortening somethings model/generation tag to a simple number at the end for simplicitys sake is a generally accepted vernacular. "3rd generation xxx" goes to "xxx 3" to make it easier to say quickly in conversation.

You know, OP, this happens to cars every year.

A 2012 BMW 320i will still be called a 320i in 2013. There might be very slight tweaks in the internals and controls, but it'll still be a '320i'. And it would have cost you far more than the $500-$850 for your iPad.

And yet, you don't hear anyone complaining about that.

I don't even think this is a '1st world problem'. It's a misunderstanding of how the world works.

Oh wait, maybe that is a 1st world problem.

The iPad 3rd Gen was not discontinued as such, it merely evolved into the 4th Gen iPad. Everything on the outside is identical. The design, the weight (the 4th Gen is marginally, in sheer numbers, slightly "heavier" than the 3rd Gen), thickness are all the same. The only changes are the faster A6 and the new Lightning Port.

The 3rd and 4th Gen will, for now, receive the exact same iOS updates going forward. There will, eventually, be games which will take advantage of the A6 but for now the differences between 3rd and 4th Gen performance are negligible with the main difference being slightly increased frame rates, but again not by much. For example, the latest update for NFS Most Wanted has improved the frame rate on the 3rd Gen iPad, which otherwise has the same lens flare, road reflections, real time car reflections, lighting effects, as the 4th Gen iPad displays.

Calm down, your iPad still works fine and will continue to do so. As I said, in six to eight months time though you may well see your iPad begin to get dumbed down versions of games as the A6 is pushed further by developers. However, iOS development and the need to support the large number of owners of previous generations means that the latest model rarely peaks immediately or even within six months.

Chill.

I did have think that the discontinued what was the new iPad (3rd generation) was so that people not in the know sees the spec of the mini and sees it is comparable with the only other one on sale, the iPad 2.

IMHO of course.

PJ.

its because of the upads use in education. they use the ipad 2 because its cheaper and theres no need for retina.

Wow! You must feel really smart! Do you refer to your refrigerator by manufacturer and model #?

There is no device 'called' the iPad 3, true. What you said before though is that there's no device 'known as' the iPad 3. That isn't true. The third generation iPad is 'known as' the iPad 3 to lots of people.

If you read the OP I stated that I already have the iPad 3. I am more or less unhappy with the fact that it has been about 6 months since I got this and now they are discontinuing the iPad 3 as a product.

Did your iPad 3 break? Does it still work???

There's alot of confusion about it but Ipad 4 is just a slightly rebadged Ipad 3 with some better features added. Discontinued probably as the retina display is still to expensive to phase out the Ipad 2 line.

Ipad 4 should drop down to the Ipad 2 price come Ipad 5 though.

The issue is that the resale value of the device plummeted, most people use the proceeds from selling their devices to help them purchase the newer model.

He or she could have sold it when the latest model was announced.

I call it what it is. Of course. Why would I make up a name?

sigh. people will argue about the dumbest things.
