So why did they name the ipad The New iPad and not the ipad 3 or ipad hd? Was this all part of Job's plan?

They didn't name it "The New iPad", it's just "iPad." Much like the new iMac, when it comes out, will be the "iMac" with no number appended.

It's called iPad, iPad 3rd gen. to be exact

But people will butcher the crap out of the name, the same way people still call the iPhone 4 iPhone 4G

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B179 Safari/7534.48.3)

They didn't name it The New iPad.

It's just "iPad" and it's "the new one." Get it?

Jobs's plan? Who knows, but it's the same way they've been doing it with laptops, desktops and iPods for decades.

Because the numbering turns into a mess. iPad 3 with 4G and iOS 5. iPhone 4 with iOS 4 worked, but it gets messy real fast.

Plus getting to iPad/iPhone 7,8.... is going to look tacky.

On their site it is call the new ipad

That's because it is the new iPad, not because that is it's name. If someone sends pictures of their new baby and says 'look at my new baby' it doesn't mean that is the child's name.

This is the order confirmation:

Personalized iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G LTE for AT&T 32GB - Black (3rd generation)

I was just watching the launch and every site.. Gizmodo, mashable, the verge etc were all calling it something different.

There was undoubtedly some confusion at the launch because everyone was expecting some new designation but nobody was expecting "iPad."
