You sir, have no idea how 64-bit addressing works, stop spreading misconceptions. The amount of memory, available and effective, is the same as it was under 32-bit. Also more RAM isn't the solution to everything. More RAM will not solve memory leaks. More RAM will use up your battery faster.
You are mistaken, 64-bit apps require 20-30% more memory than 32-bit apps:

In general you’re looking at a 20 - 30% increase in memory footprint when dealing with an all 64-bit environment.

This is why you effectively have less memory in the iPad Air than the iPad 3/4.
You still have 1GB of RAM, but now that Apple has moved to 64-bit, applications require 20-30% more memory.

So you effectively have less RAM in the new iPads than the previous generation, which is why so many people are experiencing problems with apps reloading content or crashing now.

Devices should have had 2GB RAM with the move to 64-bit. I was already running into memory limits on my iPad 3, and it's worse on the Air/Retina Mini now.

I have a 3 and bought an Air over the weekend and love it. At first I was convinced that I wanted the rMini, but after looking at it in the store and realizing how light the Air is, I went for better color gamut and larger screen over the smaller size.

My husband's getting my iPad 3 (he has a 2 now), so at least he'll have retina and LTE. He doesn't use his iPad as much as mine, so the upgrade made sense for me.

My main reasons - lighter, faster 64-bit A7 processor, easier to tote than iPad 3.

I use my iPad for reading, studying Japanese, Netflix, art apps, as a photo reference when sketching on my Surface Pro, and the odd RPG game or two.

I'm waiting. There's nothing you can do with the Air that you can't do with the 3. The weight is really impressive, having played with it in the store, but at the end of the day mine never leaves the house and I mainly use it to read at the kitchen table. The Air doesn't "change everything." It improves a few use cases. If I used mine all day then I would probably upgrade. If the 3 serves your needs, it's okay to know that there's a better product out there and let it lie. 3 is still amazing.

Completely agree. The iPad 3 is still awesome: Retina display, runs fast, iOS 7, great camera, fairly light.

The iPad Air doesn't do anything WAY better than the 3. I'm holding out until the iPad 3 stops getting supported or an upcoming iPad blows me away with something.

I actually sold my 64gb WiFi iPad 4 ($540 game stop/amazon trade in credit). Caused resell value was so high.

Keeping 64gb Verizon LTE iPad 3.resell value sucks.

I got iPad air from target black Friday WiFi model. I can always bring both iPads and tether off my Verizon LTE iPad which has unlimited Verizon phone Sim data.

Doing the same with an iPad 2!

Until the next big thing changes or it becomes wildly out of date, I don't see a point in getting a new one. If Apple still supports it, and you are still satisfied, why spend money for the sake of spending money?

Bought the iPad Air to replace my iPad 3 -- primary reasons: weight, size, capacity, issues with heat and slow charging and connectivity (at last my devices would be all using the Lightning connector). I am delighted with the iPad Air. It charges faster, doesn't get overly warm during use, and I'm having fun with the additional capacity. The lighter weight and smaller dimensions are great. I also replaced my first-generation iPad Mini with the new iPad Mini with Retina screen. I love the Mini for its portability, its small size and weight, and with the new version I was able to increase capacity and speed. For me the two new iPads complement one another quite nicely and I'm very happy.

I was originally going to sell my ipad 3 and get an air, but I think I've decided to wait until the next model. I still use this ipad everyday on ios 6 and its very fine for me. I also couldn't find anyone to buy it off of me.

Do you feel the same?

I had an iPad 3 which got too sluggish after ios7 update, so I sold it and got a mini retina.

I have had an iPad 3 since it's launch. Initially, I was not going to upgrade to the iPad Air. However, my iPad 3 was starting to get a bit laggy at times with the upgrade to IOS 7 and I was also getting close to filling up it's 32GB capacity. I ended up getting a 64GB Air when Apple had their Black Friday gift card offer. So far I am quite happy with my new Air.

Require is a strong word. While 64-bit apps use a longer pointer size (8 bytes vs 4 bytes), the growth is generally negligible. The usage of pointers also vary largely from one app to another. I won't argue against Anandtech's numbers, but I wouldn't be surprised if future updates bring those numbers down significantly.

As far as those low memory "crash logs," they're pretty normal for any *nix-based systems. This is simply the way these systems manage low memory situations - to seek out processes and ask them to terminate. The fact that Safari will just restart and reload all your pages, continue to work fine and probably eventually restart again should tell you that this is not due to the lack of memory altogether but a case of memory leak.

I didn't wait. I think I'm on the odd-number rotation when it comes to iPads. I had the 1st gen, 3rd gen and now the Air (5th gen). I didn't do the iPhone rotations so I guess I'm doing the iPad one, lol.

Nope. Just got $450 for mine on eBay so that paid for most of my Air. Going to sell the missus one now and use that to find a rMini.

I have sold my heavy ipad 3 64gb wifi for 400 dollars on ebay. I am torn between the air and rmini  will go to store and find out when they both are available in my country.

I had an iPad 3 and sold it for a Retina mini - the mini is going back mainly because it's too small, but also because color is not very good on it at all.

I wonder if I should have sold my iPad 3 though, because I don't think I want an Air. The skinny bezels on the side of the mini made it awkward to hold, and the Air has them as well.

Being 64-bit, the new iPads have less effective memory than the older models as well. The iPad 3/4 have 1GB and the Retina mini/Air effectively have 20-30% less.

Even though it's heavy, I might see if I can get an iPad 4 instead.

You can buy mine, if you want!

I plan on upgrading to an 64GB iPad Air Space Gray 64GB myself from my iPad (3rd Generation) '.'after March or possibly wait til next years iPad Air model and hold out for the Touch ID and possible Gold to match my iPhone 5S Gold 64GB

I don't use the full 64GB on my current iPad but use 36GB so, definitely need 64GB. Which is another reason to hold out for Apple possibly dropping the 16GB all together and the price go down $100. Another reason my iPad isn't even two years old yet. AppleCare runs out in March.

I'm waiting myself. May end up getting an Air if my wife expresses more interest in inheriting the 3. But so far, she hasnt. I'm hoping they come out with a 'Pro' model with larger screen since all I use the ipad for is couch surfing.

I'm waiting. My 3gen still does everything I want it to do, and there's no compelling reason for me to upgrade. Very happy with the one I have :)

Got me a nice rMini 128GB and my iPad 3 64GB is sitting somewhere collecting dust. Can't see me going back to that old, heavy and slow device. Unfortunately I might be forced to carry an additional Air around which my company forces on me, but I guess it is still better to carry a mini and an air instead of two airs.

My iPad 3 is excellent after 7.0.4 update.

Very usable now. I actually dropped plans to upgrade to iPad Air.

Hope Apple does not read this.:p

I sold my 3rd gen 32gb wifi and bought a mini r 32gb. The weight, the size and the terrible performance made me sell my 3.

If it weren't for the fact that the iPad 3 is missing the gaussian blur effect, the new Air and Mini probably wouldn't even be on my radar.

I thought about it though...and concluded that about 90% of the time, all I really do on my iPad is browse the internet, watch Youtube, listen to music, and go on Reddit. So for now, I'm fine waiting. Probably won't upgrade until they make 2GB standard on iOS. When that happens, devs will have a new target to aim for and that will be when an upgrade might be necessary to stay current.

I was holding out for a retina mini, and now I have it I'm giving my 3 to my sister for Christmas. My other sister is getting my iPhone 5 - that's the only way I could justify getting a 5s!

I Caved

I checked out the Air and thought it was pretty cool, but like a lot of others, didn't think it was good enough to replace my 3. I don't really game so the 3 still feels fast and responsive for what I use it for (mostly web surfing and video watching).

However, I've been coveting the mini since it came out because of its form factor and weight. It has been VERY hard to wait for retina (I don't want scratched eyeballs). Finally the retina is out and there is all the color gamut hub-bub so I told myself to wait.... BUT I COULD NOT RESIST

God I'm a gadget whore.

I still have my 3 but I'm probably going to sell it or give it to a family member. The rMini is just too nice and its all I use. I don't notice the gamut thing so far. I haven't put them side by side yet, and probably wont, why do that to myself?
