I have an ipad 3 yes I know it old an so forth but does what I want so please don't tell me buy a new one.

It use it with duet on my macbook air and for youtube, boombeach in bed in evenings.

I'm using a genuine apple ipad charger not iphone charger that the last owner was using.

If I use youtube when plugged in the battery still drops.
Is this normal?

Is youtube a real battery drain?
if on battery not plugged in in goes for days and days just use in evenings.

I thought it would still charge but slower.
Charges quite quick if powered off.

It could be that yes, youtube is a battery hog on the iPad 3.They might not be optimizing for a 5 year old device anymore......sooooooo GET A NEW IPAD....seriously its time!

It's also possible the battery is nearing the end of its life and not charging as efficiently anymore. Just try not using youtube when charging if its an issue.

I believe that's a degraded battery. My ipad3 was doing the same thing. Plugged in and running intensive apps it would discharge slower whilst in use, but still discharge.

I can watch youtube on battery for hours and hours fine.

Just thought plugged in it might actually charge it a bit.
It will drop 2-3% every half hour plugged in and on youtube.
It drops about 5-10% on battery every 30-60 mins.

I am still not too upset about this.
It is mainly used for youtube/boombeach in evenings.
Having said that been using my phone more for these things lately.

I bought the ipad used off facebook selling page, about 6 months ago for £75.
It is cellular model.
Bought for main purpose of duet on macbook air but I rarely seem to do this now.

When using duet on my 2012 macbook air at work all day, I only loose 12-15% battery on the ipad.
That is using it roughly 9 to 5.

It might be old but is still a very good tablet

Yes that is normal . It's likely your using the original iPad charger and not the new one. Apple shipped a 10w with all iPads, but when the iPad 3 came out it was discovered it could drain the battery even while on the supplied charger, when the iPad 4 came out Apple shipped it with a 12w charger and it was able to always charge. http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/apple-12w-usb-power-adapter/

YouTube is a massive battery drain because the iPads first generation Retina display is rather inefficient and uses a massive amount of power.

iPad 3 takes about an hour less to charge on the 12w charger, and will always charge.

Basically: the charger Apple supplied for the iPad 3 was inadequate in some situations. Apole admitted this pretty much with the next iPad.

I bought a new charger as it did not come with one when bought it.

I do not know off hand if i bought a 10 or 12 watt.

Will look into a 12w if not got one thank you.

on battery one hour of youtube drains about 10-15% not plugged in.
if plugged in I loose 2-5% per hour

I have had iPads that do not charge or charge very slowly when using the device on YouTube or gaming.

If you really love you ipad, get a new battery installed and it will keep serving your purpose.

I can live with it, just if i forget the charge it overnite and try playyoutube it will die on me.

it not end of world and battery still holds good charge for long time too.

so not think it a battery failing just app not setup for old hardware.

I have a 12W charger already.

so unless I buy a high power non approved charger will have to live with it.

You're not alone, my iPad 3 has been serving me since its launch as well. As for your issue, does reducing screen brightness help?
